Reading up on making a trip over the boarder this weekend. It's saying It's advisable to arrive well over a few hours before the stage starts - which equates to a start time of some un-godly time in the morning by the time we've driven there.
How busy does it actually get? Is aiming to get there an hour and a half before the start not going to happen?
I think i'm too used to circuit racing and good access roads/parking!

I followed it a couple of years ago, it gets very very busy, queue in the car for ages then a long trek to a vantage point. A couple of hours is ideal.
Long gone are the days when you could watch a stage for the first 30 cars, leap frog the next stage and get to a good place for the following stage.
More popular than football , or so I heard. But with cars abandoned on verges and marshalls everywhere trying to keep control, only limited access, as the rally cars have to share some roads with spectators, blinkin worth it though!

For any Rally i plan to be in stage (spot found & first coffee poured) at least an hour before the first course car comes through. Remember that the first course car could be a good 30-45 minutes before the first competing car....
Pick a stage where the cars come through twice. Consult stage maps & Google Earth and find a few places to try.

4 days in total, long hours and adverse weather - oh yes... 
(From the viewpoint of - typically - radio-marshalling in Tatton Park on the Sunday, Pundershaw on the Monday, Clocaenog I on the Tuesday and Resolfen on the Wednesday in the late '90s from memory .)Back in the 80's, I had friends in the forestry commission,with staff access and Landrovers.... who followed the RAC Lombard Rally as it was.
So made the trip on the first day to Trentham, Weston Park, Chatsworth, then drove up to a mate in the Lake District watch the highlights on TV, and got onto several forest stages there, catch the highlights on TV, then swopped into another mates car up to the borders, over to Northumberland,for a couple more stages, highlights on TV again back to get my car, down to Wales and finish in Bath or Chester.
2500 miles covered about 8 hours kip over the 4 days, about 16 stages watched, loads of experiences lived through. The names are but a memory now, Grizedale , Sweet Lamb, Clumber Park, Hafren, Kielder, Craik, Twiglees, Dalby. Audi Quattro, Metro 6R4, Lancia Delta. Tony Pond, Russell Brookes, Michelle Mouton, .
Where are they now??

Most of the stages are still regularly used by various championships (except Clumber which hasn't been used since the old 'proper' RAC days.) Tony Pond is sadly no longer with us, but 6R4's and TR7V8 still exist and occasionally come out to play. Russell Brookes, although not a well man, was at Chatsworth Rally Show 2 years ago demonstrating the Andrews Heat for Hire cars, and even Michelle Mouton sometimes makes an appearance with the sport quattro - and she doesn't hang about! If you feel the yearning for 30 years ago, look for the British Historic Rally Championship events and the Roger Albert Clark (including night stages in Dalby). Historic Rallying and its supporters are in good health.
