Bricar 2013 discussion

I'll start, and I think I may speak for a good few here.
I competed in 2011 and 2012 in the Intersport no 65 M3 that has done Britcar 24hr since it was built in 2008.
This year, the noise police pulled us in quali for 103db, we changed the airbox and got it down to 96db, but 6 hours AFTER the start of the race they started black flagging cars relentlessly, including ours. We lost about an hour and a half messing about with the car due to this, and with it all hope of the class win. How can this be after 6 hours, its totally taking the piss. I know its outside of Britcars control, but they as the customer must dictate to Silverstone, its ruining motor racing, we did the entire race having to throttle off on the pit straight as we passed the microphone. Is that REALLY racing guys?
Also taking the piss is Britcar. £15 for team tabbards? Are they REALLY that short of the £495 it got them? Is the £5k+ entry and the overpriced fuel not enough? And then to REALLY rub salt in our wounds they charged £100 to park the motorhomes (we had 2). I thought "fair enough, it will help to keep the pits a bit clearer" Oh no, we paid £200 to park behind the toilet block in the same area as the motorhomes that had come with the support racing and parked there for free. Bear in mind my team, Intersport have probaly parted with the thick end of £30k in entry fees to Britcar this year, so I dont think "free" parking in a spot that doesnt cost them anything is asking alot really?
So to 2013. James Tucker was apparently talking about Britcar 24 in the same sentence as the Nurburgring 24 this weekend. He needs to go visit the N24.
Racecars that sound like racecars not vacuum cleaners.
Fuel that costs the same as fuel and not unicorn cum.
Spectators by the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS.
HUNDREDS of entries. Not 33.
They need to get together with Silverstone and work at resurrecting this great event, because to my mind, it all but died this weekend. Lack of entries, cars excluded and seriously hampered for noise issues, customers who are pissed off at getting charged thru the nose for everything and anything, stupidly expensive fuel. Come on Britcar, use your brains and your calculators.
70 cars @ £4k is £280k
33 cars @ £5.5k(?) is £181k
You do the math. I for one wont be doing next year unless things change. Its cheaper to get our 24hr drug at Spa, Nurburgring and Barcelona.

I was working this weekend too, it was my first Britcar (spectating or spannering) and I was a bit dissapointed to be honest. We did Nurburg 24hr which was awesome, much better atmosphere, many more cars, exactly what you said Hazy.
We too got black flagged for noise (Jag XFS Diesel), which surprised even the marshal who came to tell us! This was during the gearbox swap, and we left the garage exactly as we entered it (at least exhaust wise), and heard nothing more about it. Not very consistent?
Also speaking for myself, not for team.

I popped over for a few hours on saturday night, not working this time as non of the team I work with were there. not sure if it was the noise regs or only 33 cars but it was very very quiet..
JT was talking about it becoming the Silverstone 24hr with s/stone doing some of the promotion maybe they might have more sway with the locals then.
Any organiser though is going to be paranoid about noise though with the way the law works these days. it seemingly only takes one person to get a bit grumpy and a multi million pound venue can be closed down at the drop of a hat..
that jag was almost silent !!

Hazy, first of all speaking on behalf of the MMC Motorsport Seat, we were sorry to see your final problems and the clash with the Nissan - it was going to be an exciting few hours!
Obviously we benefitted from the poor turnout in part, by achieving our 5th overall - but my main issue with the event this year was how its been reported & how its set up and amied at the "big boys" - but the big boys on the whole have little interest in it. I think Britcar have lost sight of who the race is aimed at, or more importantly, who supports it. Its because of teams like Intersport & Top Cats that the Series and ultimatley the 24 Hours race, exists. But they seem content to aim their sights higher - to make it clear, Britcar will never be British GT or Blancpain, because they will never have the funds or experience of an Organisation like the SRO behind them. This is not a criticism aimed at Britcar - because on & off I have supported this Series for 6 years , but perhaps we should revert back to the romance of the original Whilhire events?!
Sitting on the pit wall all race and listening to the Le Mans radio coverage, I got the impression I was listening to a 24hour Ginetta commercial. Lawrence Tomlinson was interviewed more times than the number of pitstops we did! Our team / car did not feature at all - even though we were running in the Top Ten for 14 hours!!!
And I've now had chance to read Dailysportscar.com, and we surprise, surprise, we don't get mentioned there at all for the whole 24 Hours either!
Shame on Britcar and all those media brought into report on the race & the brief they got. This race is for the UK club & GT racer, the chance for the ordinary man on the street to take part with little experience or pedigree. Perhaps if more time was spent listening to, and catering for the average Joe - and not Works teams (agree Hazy, fuel and motorhome charges were criminal and no positives can be taken from Britcar's approach of this) then perhaps more teams would turn up.
For those members of the media who were in attendance at the weekend - no we haven't served in the Armed Forces, and no we aren't a multi million pound UK car manufactor BUT the MMC Motorsport Seat, a team made of Insurance Brokers and Mechanics with only one 24 hour race between them, beat off the challenge of the Ginetta Works team et al, by running a car reliably for 24 Hours - the only problem being one extra chance of brake pads - and proved that the little guy can achieve great things. We are ordinary blokes, who ran on a shoestring budget - we even had to put our Transit infront of our little lorry in the paddock to bring the front of our vehicles level with all the other lorries in the paddock!!
But I guess the main problem is we weren't a big enough name for Britcar or the media so we got treated like we did.
Its Barcelona & Dubai for us now - the car & team have now got some pedigree, and perhaps we will be appreciated more there. We loved the weekend, and thanks to Britcar & their staff for the hard work behind the scences - but I for one feel that their efforts weren't rewarded to the full. Which is a pity.
(Represent my personal views and not those of MMC Motorsport as a whole).

Andy, congratulations on your result, I lost count the number of times we reeled you in only to see you dissapear off into the distance! If you do go to Barca give Kev Clarke a shout, we may be able to share transport costs for the cars etc! We never got interviewed either to my knowledge despite us keep clawing our way back into the top 10....
Overall the event was a bit of a non event wasnt it, and Britcar/Silverstone have a mountain to climb to get it back to where it was. Regarding the noise, someone HAS to make a stand, otherwise motorsport will be finished IMO.
This is what I would do
Get Silverstone to agree to 103db static NO driveby
Charge £4k plus VAT.
Make a TRANSPARENT deal with fuel companies for the supply of the fuel, rather than a handshake and brown envelope deal.
Let teams use existing Britcar tabbards, if they need extra, on request @ £5 each (and dont give us the b
ks about too many people in pit lane/wall, go and look at the pitlane during the N24, part of the atmosphere.
Let teams park motorhomes and vehicles FOR FREE.
Approach three eshtablished teams. Approach 5th Gear. Get 5th gear to put Tiff, Plato and Vicki in three different cars and give the three cars free entry. This is the cheapest, highest profile TV coverage they could ever hope for.
Britcar 24 is in serious danger of dissapearing, Im really interested to hear the plans they have for 2013 to save it.

Hmmmm....'popped down on Friday night to watch my old pal in one of the Porsches. He was chuffed to bits to be racing in one of these machines and he drove really well....but I digress. Slightly bemused, when I got there, at the lack of entries and the rather drab atmosphere. OK it was beginning to drizzle and was a little chilly but (and correct me if I'm wrong) why did it take 30 minutes before any car bothered to go onto the track at 1900? When I've driven here, every team makes the most of every minute offered. Anyway my mate got his 3 laps in and a few more so I had a beer and toddled off home.
The next day, I looked at the entry list and was amazed to see that 10 cars had 5 or more pilots. If this recession hadn't really kicked in before, it certainly has now! Either that or it is getting prohibitively more expensive. Anyway, I got there in good time for the (frankly, quiet pedestrian) start, and waited to watch my mate get into the car at the first changeover.
I have driven the 24hr 3 times, now. The first was a DIY job in 2008 stimulated by the 2007 Top Gear entry (on the premise that if these 3/4 jokers could do it, so could I), the second was in 2010 when I paid a lot of money for a drive in a proper racing car - it was horribly disappointing (not just because of the weather, the team were right up themselves and treated me like shoite). The third time in 2011, I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and got a bargain drive for a very professional and experienced team who were all lovely people.
Let me tell you now, the best one by miles was the first year in 2008 when we did it ourselves. Admittedly we had a lot of luck but we managed to finish and win our class. It was the best fun I've had since going out with my best mate's sister!
Now it's not very scientific but JT, if you could offer us the same deal as 2008, with the same regs, Ts and Cs, you'd get 60-70 cars on the grid. Or am I being naive? Probably, but I'm willing to be shot down in the pursuit of getting it back to what it was ....because it was (or seemed to be) more fun then.

BRITCAR 2013 SUGGESTION!
How about a prize for the quietest car that finishes in the top 5 of each class. To prevent milk floats from running there has to be a minimum of 10 finishers in the class for the prize to be awarded.
are you gay or what? And as for your post before, get real. I 100% will not be paying any money to race a car that sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Im assuming you have never raced/driven a proper car with a proper engine? How about a prize for the quietest car that finishes in the top 5 of each class. Have to agree with what Hazy said
I guarantee certain cars did not enter because they cant pass the noise test . When a Honda jazz that's no louder than a tumble dryer gets disqualified then something is wrong and I was there with the Porsche when they were testing the jazz It sounded quiter on full rpm than the Porsche did ticking over
Realistically a Porsche can't really enter the race because its just not possible to get them below 100db
What was the limit when the parragon RSR ran a few years ago

I have competed in every Brit car 24 hr event since 2008 and the Britcar 500 in 2009, i have to say that although it is always an epic undertaking for a small team and even if there where only 10 cars on the grid it is still something to just get the car to run for 24 hours on a very tight budget
We enter for fun, we cant afford a quick car, we are very much amateurs but we love our racing.
Having said that this year was disappointing for several reasons.
1: the stupid £100 motor home charge.
Brit car people told me this was just something silverstone charge them and they where just passing it on. Not going to comment on the validity of this but it seems petty in the extreme and left a nasty taste in my mouth before i even got there
2: 33 cars on the grid
Every year the "provisional" entry list has a little imagination in it, Brit car are not the only ones to do this, but to go from 55 cars 2 weeks before to 33 is a little extreme.
3: over zealous paddock police
We where hassled from thursday evening to move all vehicles from the paddock area even though it was half empty, and stayed that way for the duration. If the paddock had been organised so the concession stands that did turn up where together and additional vehicle parking was allowed this would have helped to fill the half empty paddock and create at least the impression of a busy grid.
4: the stupid noise regulations.
Although this did not affect us directly it rather spoilt the whole race atmosphere. I can not agree with some comments that this is the way things are going. Noise is and always has been part of the atmosphere. I know its not Britcar's fault but if we cant have MSA noise regs the big teams will not come and the small teams with quick cars will have problems and not bother next year.
Ok so suggestions for 2013
Sort the noise thing out, at 100db it is going to die
Look at Barcelona entry fee 4500 euro, free fuel, 6 free tyres, this is done to attract numbers and get the event on everyones calendar.
Stop with the stupid extras and treat the teams as they are..... Customers who without there participation and money the event wont happen
I will be very sad if this is the last 24 hr in the UK, but i will have to think very seriously about not going to Barcelona next year.

Yes Markgt3 Porsches will always struggle topass a static , we ahd a standard turbo road pipe on and were way over , but on drive by no issues . Static is not good when the engine is in the wrong place.....
Agreed though the fun is getting to the end with Hastle and grief not getting a mildly tuned road car and having a trouble free run which is the way it may go with the sound issue

Hmmmm !!!! Okay here's my opinion on Silverstone 24 and the previous posts
1. The noise limit was a major challenge for me. One of our cars had not a hope in hell of making the limit for more more than an hour or so. Of the two cars we did run one cost nearly 4k plus VAT for an exhaust system and the other cost us 2k before the event, a further 500 before night qually and still we got black flagged during the race. We only finished by short shifting way down the rev range and being careful near the sound mics. Hardly motor racing.
2. Diesel at the same cost as 102 CF ? Hmmmm
3. If Silverstone and their NIMBY neighbours don't want us then let's all f**k off to somewhere we are !!
4. Embrace the true customer base - even the N24 and Dubai have a significant number of Production based entries.....
The event itself (along with the Britcar chamionship) desperately needs PROMOTION - I'm not talking out of class either - the whole team at Britcar know my views on this. I find the fuel costs hard to pass on as well as the various odds and sods like motorhomes etc but I kinda gave up mentioning it. I have nothing but admiration for Anders at Sunoco but the way the champonship is set up there is little chance of one of our drivers winning the Sunoco challenge so why pay the premium for entering it ? The facts are that other venues WANT our business and to me it appears that the UK in general either doesn't or is unable to deliver due to external forces. Either way it's their loss.
I told JT he should look at what Creventic do (promotion) and I for one am happy to either assist or do it myself as part of my wider ambitions.
I do speak for the whole team !!!!

I think more of an effort needs to be made to include local communities regardless of where it is held so instead of tolerating a 24 hour event they instead embrace it. A driver parade with a few cars parked up in the town centre plus whatever else to draw punters from the circuit and even curious bystanders into the town. It would give the locals who perhaps don't follow motorsport a bit of an insight of just what is going on and how it is so much more than just cars going around in circles.
Just imagine a temporary road closure inbetween the circuit and the village to allow a load of race cars to parade around the town.
Just imagine a temporary road closure inbetween the circuit and the village to allow a load of race cars to parade around the town.
Probably upset the local even more!
I'm sorry but if you want a 24 hour race to survive in the face of noise complaints then there is no point in saying to the locals "man up" or "you shouldn't have moved there" etc; that may all be true, but we are in a minority sport and if we want it to survive we are going to have to "play the game" and behave ourselves and adapt to local conditions. One day soon, racing will only be able to take place with cars that are no louder than road cars and if that's the way it is in order to allow us to race then so be it.
I'd rather be involved with racing quiet cars than sitting in the pub reminiscing about how it used to be!
We won't beat the noise lobby so we have to work to comply, saying "stuff you" will just get us banned.

You've obviously never seen the legendary Nick Mann's twin turbo Rover V8 Morris Minor in action to post the reply that you did (no disrespect to the noise Nick's car made).
As for your homophobic remark - I'll ignore that as being childish and immature.
To qualify my suggestion I think there would need to be minimum noise level of say 85 or 90db and that only normally aspirated petrol engines would be eligible.
As for yourself I'll assume you're a poor loser.
Far from it, I just have a very low tolerance level for idiots commenting on a sport they obviously know naff all about, which you have qualified perfectly with the 85db suggestion. We measured the ambient noise in our pit garage the weekend at it was about 77db!As for your homophobic remark - I'll ignore that as being childish and immature.
