Anyone remember...
Discussion
Way back in the 90's and something to do with the British GP, can't remember exactly what but current F1 drivers having a race around a track in 'company cars'?
Seem to remember Hill and Coulthard (or Mansell so could've been 94) running around in Clio Williams whilst the Ferrari drivers might've had Alfas or Fiats?
I'm sure it happened, and was on TV. Or maybe I dreamt the whole thing up?

Possibly some special event?
I think there was a plan to use procars like this Alfa Romeo for something similar:

Not to be confused with the earlier BMW M1 Procar series which featured F1 drivers:

Don't think that it happened at all as a race.
There have been plenty of times drivers have been driven round in cars of the same family as those they are driving/the engines behind them.
There was a Tommy's race in the '90's arranged by Lisa Dennis but I don't think that many or indeed any of the F1 drivers too part. Likewise the XJR-15's were not raced by any F1 drivers in the same weekend as they were in the main event.
As suggested by another poster the closest to what you have suggested that actually made it out the pub was the M1 Procars.

The F1 drivers going round Silverstone in company cars was to raise money for injured mechanics. The public paid to be driven round. Then the event got watered down because it was getting too difficult to arrange for the drivers to be in the same place at the same time IIRC.
Might well have happened, not on a GP weekend though.Rude-boy said:

No, I recall it on a go weekend in the 90s. Fezzas and Clio willliams, but I seem to recall some real mundane cars for some of the drivers too. I'm sure it was at silverstone, not sure what it was in aid of though.
Gosh, I am surprised. I would have thought I would have recalled it, I don';t think I missed a BGP in the '90's.Now who else remembers the running/cycling race around the track on the Thursday night - Was very annoyed that they stoped that the first year I took my bike!

I remember seeing something about this, but it wasn't a race. It was around '94 or '95. Ford has a couple of Escort Cosworths for Schumacher and Herbert (that'll give you the year then) and there were several other cars for other F1 drivers.
The bit I remember was the guy who was sitting alongside Schumacher (just an average Joe) who at one point Schumacher asked to change gear for him, from 4th to 5th, as they were going pretty much sideways around a corner. The reason he couldn't change himself was because he was on the phone arranging for his private plane to be fueled and ready to leave when he'd finished. 5th gear, sideways and one handed and still with enough spare capacity to sort out his journey home.
Amazing.

Might well have happened, not on a GP weekend though.I just had a vision of Hill in a mundane car going round a track and mentioning about other F1 drivers either overtaking him or him overtaking them. The part about the public makes sense because I do vaguely remember there being someone in the car with him.
Least I'm not crazy now. The odd things you remember.
Now if we could figure out exactly what it was...

Schumacher + Herbert + Ford would be the end of 94 before Benetton switched to Renault engines then. The bit I remember was the guy who was sitting alongside Schumacher (just an average Joe) who at one point Schumacher asked to change gear for him, from 4th to 5th, as they were going pretty much sideways around a corner. Confirms again that it actually happened, and a great image of Schumi there too.

As others have already suggested it sounds like the GP Mechanics Trust event. If so it was definitely not on a GP weekend.
According to this article the event must have been held on Wednesday 3rd October 1994 which matches my recollection of it being late in the season.
F1 teams will not have allowed their drivers to make guest appearances in other races during the GP weekend since rules were brought in that prevented drivers from competing for a set period after a concussion. No-one would risk their driver having to miss a GP due to a crash in a support race.

I am pretty sure Jackie Stewart organised it. I think they did it for two years running. I remember Jean Alesi driving a Fiat or Alfa, it then breaking down, then him taking a BMW M3 out instead. He said something along the lines of " I am here for the mechanics so I am not stopping because my company car has failed."
