F1 dashboard info...

Watching todays Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a lot of in-car shots were shown of the Reb Bull RB8. The 'dashboard' display shows the selected gear centrally, with a numeric indicator either side. I notice that Vettel had what appeared to be speed in kmh, and Webber's car was showing different information. What would Mark be showing, and why would Vettel need a speed indicator? Given that historically, racing cars would only have a rev counter and smaller sub gauges (oil temp/pressure/voltage etc).

Thanks. It just appeared strange for a elite driver wanting to be aware of his speed, when it's not normally displayed in junior formulae...mrmr96 said:

Top speed would be useful in determining how good the drive was off the corned preceding the straight.
Logically another parameter to measure performance, just not one I'd ever noticed on a racecar before.Thanks for replies..D
Fairly sure the drivers can spec different info for each display and cycle through it.
Also, the "dash" is a control part, i.e.: all the teams use the same ones (I think!). As far as I've noticed, only the Red Bull and Torro Rosso's have them mounted on the chassis, the rest of the teams mount them on the wheel.

I remember DC saying a few year ago that he had worked hard with McLaren to get the dashboard perfect and that when he went to Red Bull, he asked if they could buy it in from McLaren rather than waste time and money developing their own unit.
i'm not sure if it's now a standardized unit for all the teams.
