So, good thing, bad thing? Is it better to have a car qualify in 'full trim' rather than having DRS open whenever you want, or will it leave the drivers unsure as to when they can open, or close the flappy thing?

Personally, I think it is a good thing.

I'd agree. The only get to use DRS in the race when they're up the chuff of the car in front and that's very rarely the case during qualifying, so it makes sense not to allow it.

Definitely a positive change, not really sure why it was allowed in the first place to be honest.

Slightly misleading title, as they will still be able to use DRS in practice and qualifying but only in the designated DRS zone(s). Free use of DRS throughout the lap has been banned.

It's an article written by Andrew Benson so it's not surprising really. The guy is a grade A tt and Z rate journalist.

Alright chaps, steady on. Cool the little green monster down.

1. Journos don't write the headlines. Subs do. Primarily to make you click on the article.
2. 'DRS only allowed in the designated race DRS overtaking zone from 2013, rather than anywhere the drivers like' is hardly snappy, is it?
3. Paragraph 7:

Andrew Benson said:
As far as the DRS is concerned, next year its use will be restricted to the specific zones on the track aimed at increasing overtaking.

rofl Wow I did overreact. I thought there had been an edit from Benson. He is awful though, most comments on his articles are about his tabloid nature of reporting.

Sorry to poo on your thread.

I think the change is good, the skill should be in driving and not remembering to push the button. It also means cars with higher down force have no advantage by opening it early now in qualifying so the gaps should be smaller and quali more exciting smile

Completely the wrong move in my opinion, I was hoping they would open race DRS use up to practice/quali DRS rules, would be a good way to show which drivers can handle a loose car on throttle coming out a corner!

In that case why not get rid of the flappy wings and just have lower downforce and lower costs/complexity?

Good move restricting DRS in qually imo but I'd still rather lose it completely and have more genuine racing

hmmm not sure about this..

I reckon we'll see lots of teams send their number 2 out and then their number 1 in order to trip the DRS for the number 1.

confused

Not being deliberately obtuse (just thick); could you expand...on your point...not "get fatter"

Not sure that is how it will work. I think they will be able to use DRS in the activation zones, but without the need to be 1 second behind anyone.

That's how I read it too, limiting where they can use it but not when

Ah, I read it they'd need the 1 sec gap.

If they don't it means that (all things being equal) cars should qualify closer to their race pace.
For teams (like STR) who have high top speeds but lack in other areas its bad news as they will probably end up qualifying further down the order.
For those with a more balanced car its good news, because they won't get stuck behind the teams that have high top speeds.

My understanding that they allowed it everywhere in practice and quali in order to encourage teams to develop it and set the car up accordingly. The fear was that if it was only allowed in one place then DRS advantage over a whole lap would be small and teams would design and set the car up without it and avoid any compromises DRS brings.

OT but not seen a thread on it - do folks think the amended wing regulations might have a more major impact?

It won’t happen but I would like to see the wings removed so that the cars look like overpowered formula fords (as was) or Lotus 49’s. The whole debate about how cars can be made to fallow the one in front more closely and slowed down in the corner has been going on for years with tinkering. None of the rule makers having the balls to do something drastic.

It won’t happen. F1 has lost its way I think. Sorry to take this thread off topic a bit but the whole wing thing gets my goat every time it comes up.

I don't think free use of DRS in qualifying negates driver skill in any way, in fact if anything it's the opposite with things frequently getting decidedly and the odd big, fast, scary accident as drivers try to get the DRS open as early as possible on the way out of quick corners, I mean it can't be easy dealing with a big chunk of your rear downforce going away as you're trying to get the throttle open at speed with the car still turning :-)

With you on the other bit though....
