Noticed this as a result of Taki Inoue's rather amusing Twitter.

Hard to make out if this is a wind up when it's in japanese. But other sites would suggest it isn't, I can't believe people would donate to this 'charity'! I think it's taking the piss a bit accepting this money too, I'm sure by current japan standards poor old Kamui hasn't had a hard life.
It's interesting, and I'm not sure what way I'd look at it. While as a 'charity' idea it does seem a bit wrong, something like this can give fans a direct opportunity to support and help a driver, especially when in so many cases it seems that talent is pretty much irrelevant. All the teams appear to look for is the huge wads of money in the drivers pockets.

From what I remember after his brief Toyota stint, his dad runs a sushi shop. He was going to go back and work there if he didn't get the Sauber driver originally. Not sure what makes you think he is well off?
Heard a fairly strong rumour he is heading to Super GT. Which is more interesting than F1 anyway, hopefully they can strike a decent TV deal.

Getting 800k to fly around the world driving an F1 car while other japanese people are drowning, turning green or having tunnels fall on them makes him pretty well off in my book! Not somebody in need of charity.Not sure what makes you think he is well off?

Who are you to tell people how to spend their money. Seems like a great idea and one that if was succesful to get him a drive would see the fans as his clients to invite to races, do meet the driver sessions with etc rather then a dull old corporate taking their pound of flesh. NISaxoVTR said:

But I do like the sound of this Ed, but do you think it would actually happen? Unless, of course, this is the spin he's used to get the coin in. That makes it more of a lottery, than a donation.
Hmm, maybe I should think about sponsoring Jenson a few sovs - could land me a VIP experience at Silverstone next year.

IIRC Kobayashi isn't too well off - he was working in a Sushi restaurant I believe.
He got up to 8 million Euro in fan and sponsor money, and it still wasn't enough.

Which is a shame because he really is a pretty good driver; certainly better than quite a few who will be on the grid.
