Will it still be free to view to Sky HD+ customers in 2013 or might we get a nasty shock early in the New Year?

If they require you to subscribe to the Sky Sports package I will have to watch it on the BBC as I am damned if I will help to pay for football coverage.

Their viewing figures will plummet if they decide to charge extra for it - I certainly won't be interested in paying for footy that I won't watch.

I thought they had said the F1 channel is 'free' as long as you subscribe to a package or if you had the HD channels?

That's as I understood it - have HD, have F1

I think it is inevitable that Sky will eventually move the F1 to a pay to view format however I'd be surprised if it is any time soon but would take a punt on it happening after the BBC finally ditches F1 in 2018.

That's exactly what I'm expecting to happen in the long term. I could be happy with that IF it's a Sky Motorsport channel with good coverage of the likes of NASCAR, LeMans, BTCC, etc to run alongside the F1 offering. I won't hold my breath on that one though.

I can't see moving F1 to Sky sports gaining any extra revenue for Sky. Indeed the likelihood is existing HD subscriber (like me) would seriously look at other TV options, maybe Freesat and a Netfliex sup and just forgetting about F1.

Sky Sports F1 HD confirms 2013 schedule
Sky Sports has confirmed its race coverage for 2013 which will include live coverage of every practice session, qualifying session and race from each Grand Prix weekend with ten exclusively live including the Monaco Grand Prix.

The season opens with exclusive live coverage of the first two Grands Prix – Australia then Malaysia. In 2013 you can enjoy:

Every practice, qualifying and race of the 2013 Formula 1 calendar live on Sky Sports F1 HD.
Three of the first four Grands Prix weekends exclusively live.
Ten races exclusively live, including the Monaco, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and the USA.

Sky Sports executive producer of Formula 1 Martin Turner said: “The season starts live only on Sky Sports F1 HD. We’ll bring viewers the whole story of the season, live from every practice, qualifying session and race in the calendar. We’re looking forward to covering the Monaco Grand Prix live and exclusively – it’s the jewel in the crown of F1 and this is the first time that GP will be exclusively live to Sky Sports F1 HD. We’ll follow the twists and turns of the most glamorous weekend in Formula 1 to bring viewers closer to the iconic race that every driver wants to win."

Sky Sports F1 HD will continue throughout the winter including:

A Christmas Special review show presented by Simon Lazenby with Damon Hill, Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert
Twelve specially filmed programmes looking back at each team’s 2012 season


The 2013 season kicks off with The F1 Show on 15 February followed by coverage of all three February tests and car launches.

Commentary next season will again come from Martin Brundle and David Croft, with expert analysis by Damon Hill, Anthony Davidson and Johnny Herbert. Fronting the coverage are presenters Simon Lazenby and Georgie Thompson alongside reporters Natalie Pinkham and Ted Kravitz.

There is nothing to say that the BBC will ditch F1.
If they were going to ditch F1 all they would have had to do is see out the contract they had and walk away then, but this has extended their contract to show F1.

I can't see Sky Sports F1 going as a Sky Sports exclusive for 2013, but at the same time I can't see it as staying part of the HD pack until 2018 either.

This is what I have thought would have been the better idea from the very start, during the day and on non-race weekends and the off-season period there is very little to show, showing other types of motorsports, even if they were delayed would at least fill in the gaps (very large ones) in the scheduling so the channel was not off-air so much.
But then they would not want to take the motorsport off of the existing Sky Sports channels and put them onto the cheaper alternative, they want to get as much money out of customers as possible.

BTCC is shown on ITV4 and I cannot see it leaving that channel for a long time yet, it would get nowhere near the level of exposure it gets on ITV4 if it went on to Sky Sports.
WRC has pretty much died in popularity terms in the UK since it left FTA TV. It used to be on Dave when I first got Freeview installed and I watched every single programme that was on and got myself interested in it yet again, but now, all that interest has gone and I no longer follow it.

Because like every other Sky SPORTS channel, Sky SPORTS F1 is a way for Sky to make a lot of money.
Sky does not care about any of the sports that they broadcast, they just care about the money that the fans of those sports will pay to watch them.

Don't mind Georgie, she's not hard on the eyes but I cannot stand Simon, je is just so wooden and jest seems out of place. There has to be another presenter in the Sky Sports club that could do the job a lot better than him.

Also storer, you pay for the Football anyway by being a Sky customer anyway.
