No Fanvision for 2013

Just read on Autosport that due to Fanvision and FOM not managing to come to an agreement over terms, Fanvision won't be present in 2013.

Seems a shame as although I've never used it, it seems like a brilliant idea!

They couldn't agree terms for Le Mans either could they hence they havent been there for a few years. Someone somewhere is being very shortsighted as it does add to being at an event.

Hopefully a replacement steps in to fill the gap, I agree having the proper commentary, driver tracker and lap times makes being at the circuit much better. Without them its easy to lose track of whats happening.

I dont think there will be a replacement, as I suspect the kit required is fairly specialised, and then you have to broadcast the data.

In theory it could be done over the internet I suspect, but the data charges would be horrific particularly when roaming abroad.

Gutted, going to Monaco GP this year and was hoping this would add to the experience.

You can buy a local PAYG sim for a few quid or attempt to negotiate your own provider down to a sensible figure, but I doubt it'd work unless you had extra cell masts brought in for the event- anyone who's been in a crowded but normally rural area such as festivals, races etc will confirm mobile internet bandwidth is pretty much non existent! It's bad enough in crowds in cities such as at gigs where hundreds are checking their facebook etc. Maybe wifi hotspots on the grandstands would work? Included in ticket price? (except UK of course where you'd pay £19.99 for 60 mins of 56k-a-like)

At very large events the mobile operators often bring in additional mobile phone masts http://trialbyjeory.wordpress.com/2010/08/25/o2-mo... although I suspect it might depend whether they are sponsoring the event in any way.

Wifi would of course be a potential solution, altough creadting enough bandwidth for all the users might be a problem.


The ideal solution does of course exist, its just they couldnt agree terms!

A real shame, as it was a great thing to have at a race. Bought one on eBay for $30 (lots of NFL season ticket holders were given them) and used it at Spa last year and Austin this year.
