So with 46 days until the Daytona 500 and 38 days until the start of speed week I thought it was time for a thread.

There is testing over the next couple of days, streaming coverage here:

Trucks: http://www.jayski.com/news/campingworld/2013/story...

Nice spotters guide for Sprint Cup : http://www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/2013/01/10/2013...

Nationwide Version: http://www.jayski.com/news/schemes/2013/nationwide...

Trucks: http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2013trucks.htm (looks like work in progress)

Who are you going to be following?
Can Brad do it again in cup ? or will the #48 be back on top ?

With Stenhouse moving on will Austin Dillon or Bayne take the Nationwide crown ?
How will Ty Dillon fair ? will Jeffery Earnhardt be another chip off the block ?

Will Buescher defend his truck title or can Ty Dillon beat him in a full season ?

Finally the NASCAR site has had a revamp in the off season, lots of information http://www.nascar.com

I think Logano and Keselowski is either a dream team or a nightmare team. Logano, despite being younger, has been over shadowed by Brad in the past 2 seasons. The 2 of them could fire each other up and may be just what Brad will need in a "title" year. Only sticky point could be with Penske getting to grips with a Ford straight out of the box. Ill let you know after Daytona....the July one that is!

Well I know sod all about NASCAR but will be finding out in October what it's all about when we travel to Charlotte NC for the Nascar race. Planned for last October but postponed - back problems. Will get opportunity to visit race shop- which team would you Nascar guys recommend? Rather not have an obvious choice but an up and comer .

If you have the time, visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte.

Not been over for a while so they may have changed a lot since then but back then Wood Brothers was just the best. Back then they were located near Martisnville which is still a museun but the new shop is near Charlotte so may be still worth a vist. Sadly you probalby wont get a guided tour by Grandma Wood like I did!
Hendrick has to be worth a look just to see the scale of the operation there, The 24 and 48 cars shop was a dissapointment but the then 5 workshop made up for it, you could walk right though it just keeping between the white lines, dont know what its like now, no doubt H&S has put paid to that.
Joe Gibbs racing was an impressive place with a large behind glass viewing area on the 1st floor.
Might be worth eeking out some Nationwide team shops for some good old fashioned access.

I reckon you have that spot on. I watched some nationwide races last year thinking to myself "why doesn't Joey drive like this in cup?" and then suddenly he pulls some moves, he's definitely got some talent there and maybe Brad/Penske can pull that out of him.

I'm wondering how long Stewart/Haas will put up with Danica before they figure out they can do better.

The Paddy Power odds for the Sprint Cup make interesting reading.

Here

I don't really see Kahne as being a contender, but Denny Hamlin / Smoke / Harvick seem to have generous odds. I really hope that Carl Edwards and RFR get their stuff together. One of the most genuine and likeable people in Motorsport.

Quite fancy a cheeky each way bet on Smoke for a top three place. scratchchin

Thats not bad odds at all for Smoke or Kenseth.

Final day of the test today, should be viewable from the streaming link I gave above.
Likely to be a bit quieter today, many teams have gone home after a wreck in draft practice yesterday, Dale clipped Ambrose up at the front and chaos ensued.
Many teams only have the one car and even sapres are limited but we should see some cars running today.

Some coverage of the accident here: http://youtu.be/ZtQwgRSWZ_g worth watching all of it but the action is 6min in.
New car is already at 200mph and I think they look pretty good.

If you ever wondered what Daytona looks like from inside, this is a great clip from Paul Menard's car http://youtu.be/o8bMo3ujsB8

Meanwhile @nascarcasm has been keeping me amused:

"We're done. Clint, you can go ahead and go home...Clint? Clint? Where's Clint?" #DaytonaTesting #NASCAR

In their garage stall, @JimmieJohnson and Chad Knaus polish a pristine #48 car, as all others drive by and give them the finger.

Stewart: "Hey guys - looks like you're drafting. Can I join in?" Everyone in unison: "NO." #Talladega #DaytonaTesting

Difficult to believe teams don't have enough parts for the Gen-6 car, when there are PLENTY available strewn about backstretch at Daytona.

Having seen the 'explain Nascar' thread I'll be trying to follow the season, unfortunately being a student means I'm likely to be restricted to twitter and youtube highlights.

I don't really know much, but Kyle Busch is pretty highly rated on the paddypower odds. Do people think he can overcome his temper and put together a winning season? I'll probably be following him and Keselowski during the season.

Far be it from me to condone it but there are, umm... other ways of watching. My good friend Justin always used to be interested, but he seems to of gone off the sport recently.

Remember Nationwide is on MotorsTV with is a FTA station I think? (albeit satellite only).

Kyle ? I dunno, he's got the speed and talent, no doubt about that but just doesn't seem to be able to string it together consistently, he only made the chase once in the last three years.
He does have a temper but nothing like Kurt's.

I'm more interested in seeing if cousin Carl can find his way back and if Hamlin can finally handle the pressure and not crack. I'd like to see Stewart up the front after a quiet year in 2012.

It's in one of the Sky packages (same one as Eurosport I think), pretty sure it's not FTA.

As I understand it, NASCAR themselves have become very active in closing down the streams of races on justin.tv.

I take the possibly radical approach of supporting broadcasters who have paid for the rights for sport I want to watch by actually subscribing to their channels.

I was told that NASCAR had been following in the footsteps of FOM in terms of illegals streams and such like.

Seems you are right about MotorsTV, its not viewable without a card in the sky box - seems no channels are viewable without the card any more.

I have seen races on youtube a day or two after the race, might be easier to check that out.

Whilst we are talking about media, this from jayski:

NASCAR Launches State-Of-The-Art Fan And Media Engagement Center: NASCAR and HP today unveiled the new NASCAR Fan and Media Engagement Center presented by HP. This first-of-its-kind resource will enable NASCAR to better serve its industry, partners and fans through a cutting-edge technology platform that facilitates near real-time response and analytics of traditional, digital and social media. NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France and HP Enterprise Services Vice President Charles Salameh were on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the center at NASCAR Plaza in Charlotte, N.C.

"The Fan and Media Engagement Center build has been a thorough process more than a year in the making, and we are excited to see it come to life," France said. "We believe this tool has the potential to be the best of its kind in sports the first ever to combine not only social, but also traditional and broadcast media analysis. We'll be able to use this to help our industry and business partners and better connect with NASCAR fans across the world. It's another example of our commitment to innovation."

HP collaborated with NASCAR to design and build the Fan and Media Engagement Center. The center is a showpiece on the 8th floor of NASCAR Plaza, where NASCAR's Digital team operates. Physical features of the FMEC include all-glass walls, a monitor bank of 13 47-inch HP displays, and the latest in touchscreen and AV technology. Behind the scenes, HP's custom-developed technology and services, based on its Autonomy analytics solutions, is the engine that processes a massive amount of data into relevant, actionable insights.

"The FMEC is the culmination of a collaboration between NASCAR and HP," said Salameh, vice president Americas region, Communications, Media and Entertainment Industry, Enterprise Services, HP. "HP's integrated solution not only benefits NASCAR's complex ecosystem by allowing real-time data capture and analysis across a wide variety of media, traditional as well as digital, tailored to specific audiences within the industry."

The FMEC will provide NASCAR the ability to monitor, analyze and better understand the current media landscape in order to respond more effectively and efficiently to fans and respond more rapidly to national, local and global media. Measurement also will be a key function of the Fan and Media Engagement Center. Those capabilities will expand across qualitative and quantitative measurements, including tonality, volume, proximity and other coverage attributes in regular reports the FMEC will generate for its industry.

He's gonna have a go at Nationwide, he's testing with MacDonald Motorsport at the end of this week.

Kyle Larson is moving up to Nationwide

There is talk of Austin Dillon moving up to cup in 2014 and using the #3. Not sure how thats going to go down with the fans...

It is, but Childress could bring it back I think ? NASCAR would have to OK it of course.
Only rumours at the moment, but I suspect they are floating the idea to see what the reaction is.. or to give people time to get used to the idea.

There's nothing official, the number is still assigned to RCR across all three national touring series (Childress drove the 3 in cup for several years before putting Earnhardt in the car) but he has chosen not to use it in Cup since Earnhardt's death in 2001, and only to let it be used by his grandchildren or Jr in Nationwide and trucks.

With just 24 days to go until the Daytona 500 (and only a couple of weeks until speedweek starts) a bit of a news update seems in order:

First of all a quick bit of gossip "hello" style - After announcing her divorce last year it emerges that Danica is dating Ricky Stenhouse. Yes, all the "bump drafting" jokes have been done; No, they aren't the first NASCAR couple to go racing - Elton Sawyer and Patty Moise beat them to it years ago smile

Everyone say "ahhh", the soon to be Mrs Hamlin gave birth to a healthy baby girl a couple of weeks ago

Enough already, what about the racing!

Cup:
Once known as the Budweiser Duels and more lately the Gatorade Duels has had a number of different formats, seems NASCAR has run out of ideas and will be getting the fans to decide the race format! See: http://www.nascar.com/en_us/the-sprint-unlimited.h...

Timmy Hill, who was NNS newbie of the year in 2011 has announced he will be running in three cup races with FAS Lane in the #32.

Bobby Labonte will be back in the #47 after re-signing for another year.
David Gilliland will be in the #38 for FRM

Kyle extended his contract with JGR in sprint cup.

NNS
JGR will be running Kyle's #54 in NNS car this year, Kyle will be the main driver, fill-ins wil be used when the schedule doesn't sort.

Rusty Wallace is fielding the #66 with son Steve Wallace at the wheel, so if you're going to the track I'd wear a crash helmet, just in case biggrin

Steven will hopefully be able to follow uncle Kenny around, who has signed to drive the #29 in an expected 8 races, he also is running the dirt truck race at Eldora. This should bring him up to 900 starts.

Good news for Piquet Jr who is moving up to NNS this year with Turner Scott motorsport.

Trucks:
Eldora looks as if its a hit with fans - grandstand seating is sold out already.

Both Scott Riggs and Chase Elliot will be running part time schedules for Ricky Benton and Hendrick respectively.

RCR have suspended the #2 team after driver Tim George Jr broke his ankle in a skiing accident, seems to be some sponsor struggles too.
