Hi all

May be you can help? I'm looking at buying a trailer for my clio track car, question is I understand I have to do my training to allow me upto 4250kg mam but my towing car is a smax with a fully loaded weight of 2505kg which means that I can pull 1745kg of load, do I have to buy a trailer with a gross weight inc clio of 1745kg or less? or can I buy a higher capacity one but use it for only my allowed towing of the 1745kg?

Cheers Gaz

If it's a 2.0TDCi then the towing capacity of the car is 1750kg. This mean the plated weight of the trailer (maximum weight - unladen trailer weight + load) must not exceed 1750.

Check your handbook as the towing weights for current S-Max models are 1500/1600/1800kG depending on engine and gearbox options.

Providing a trailer has a gross weight no more than the car's maximum towing weight, no problem, and if needed, I'd think a trailer manufacturer would provide a chassis plate with a lower gross - I'd certainly suggest asking. I'd still have and keep the original plate as if you ever wanted to sell the trailer, you may need it.

Ok thanks for your help guys, now my next question is does the trailer have its own registration or do you fit the same reg plate that is on your car?

The reason I ask this is because I'm in france ATM and to buy one in france if it has a capacity of over 750kg it gets its own plate and registration documents.

If he passed his test since the towing test was introduced, then the max towing weight of the car is irrelivent.

You can only tow up to the unladen weight of the towcar & the whole lot (laden weight of car+gross weight of the traler) must be less than 3.5 tons.

I suspect yo'll manage it with an s-max & clio if you get the trailer manufacturer to downplate the trailer to exactly what you need & no more.

UK trailers have the same number plate as the towing vehicle. As you say, France is different so I guess you need to be following the rules as per where the tow car is registered (bearing in mind ex-pats in any country frequently have their cars incorrectly registered...).
