A world first! Formula 1 testing to be in 3D
Earlier this week we announced that viewers can watch live coverage of Formula 1 in 3D across all four days of the third test from 28 February to 3 March at the Circuit de Catalunya.
This will also be simulcast in 2D on Sky Sports F1 HD as part of Sky’s unprecedented coverage of all three 2013 Formula 1 tests.
Sky Sports Executive Producer of Sky Sports F1 HD Martin Turner said: “This is groundbreaking. We’re as excited as the next fan to see what Formula 1 will look like in 3D. It’s uncharted territory, but this is a big opportunity to experiment and innovate, and we’re grateful to Formula One Management for working with us on this. Sky is a world-leader in the field of 3D broadcasting, so in partnership with Formula 1 we’re in the best position to answer public appetite and take up the challenge of bringing live F1 in 3D for the first time.”
Formula 1 will become the 14th sport to be broadcast in 3D by Sky.
Sky’s Director of 3D John Cassy said: “It’s proved a huge success with other sports, and now for the first time ever, 3D will bring TV viewers a new perspective on Formula 1.”
The coverage of pre-season testing on Sky 3D and Sky Sports F1 HD will include:
Live 3D coverage – Every day of the final test from 28 February to 3 March from 2pm on Sky 3D (also available in 2D on Sky Sports F1 HD)
Daily Coverage – Every day of every test including daily features of Ted’s Test Notebook and a programme airing at 9pm on Sky Sports F1 HD
Live coverage – Daily live reports from every test on Sky Sports News HD and live reports from Ted Kravitz in episodes of the F1 Show on 22 February and 1 March
Coverage will be presented by Simon Lazenby with commentary from David Croft and special guests. All of this will be complemented by live coverage and reports throughout the twelve days of pre-season testing on Sky Sports News HD plus news and features on skysports.com.

Well, there will only be 2 hours a day, and this was covered in another thread which has obviously gone done a few pages since.
This is a massive meh from me. Testing is boring as hell, and Sky using their expensive and pointless 3D equipment (well they have wasted money on it, so they have to use it) isn't going to make me want to watch it either.

No further subscription if you have Sky World (With Sky Entertainment Extra, Sky Movies, Sky Sports and the HD Pack -£65.75 a month). I cannot find anything on the sky website to suggest you can have (and pay for) 3D with a cheaper package.
Not available for me then. When the Olympics were on, they made 3D available to everyone who had HD, I thought they might do that to tempt us in.3D is the next Betamax. Sky are just flogging a dying horse with this one.
The industry is unlikely to put much more money into it, but those who invested in the technology a couple of years ago will try their hardest to talk it up, of course.
Forget 3D and look forward to 4K. That will be worth getting.

Still quite happy with standard def. will probably get HD eventually (blu ray being superior to dvd, i can see that) when it's the new standard. 3D is a dead end introduced to stop motion picture piracy, and to get bums in the cinema, but you lose light, look ridiculous, looks grey and gives me a headache. 4K? Looks like another attempt to get consumers consuming.
Ironically, 3D lends itself to motorsport quite well. It wont take off due to the cost, and the opinion in general that it's a fad that's already dead. With the amount invested in frame packed and SBS 3D already, it ought not to flop, but unfortunately to many plebs got on the bandwagon and produced films 'for' rather than in 3D, meaning the effect was largely pointless and left viewers thinking "this is a waste of time".
4K in time will become the standard, but truthfully (despite owning a 3D and 4K projector), most casual viewers barely notice a difference between SD and HD, so the leap to 4K might only be taken by sad geeky folk such as myself
I don't have Sky so will miss out on all this F1 stuff, but it'd be nice to see (and also how compact they've made the camera systems, assuming they're doing it properly). Something like the helmet cameras from Transformers DOTM would be sensible due to their small scale.
