Strange. It appears to have somehow briefly escaped from it's 30 year undisclosed storage location to be pedalled around Monaco by Willie Green in 2000.
Or perhaps thats a different car?

It has to be a different car, not the one driven at Monaco in 2000. Unless the forum members of Autosport who haven't seen it in the flesh and checked it's serial numbers know more about it purely by studying a couple of photos than those who have seen it, touched it and opened it up and checked it's serials numbers. It's just an internet phenomena known to some on PH as "The Dokic Syndrome". Where every one these days wants to be the first to out a fake or scam so they can say they spotted it first and bask in the glory of their fellow internetists kudos.Or perhaps thats a different car?

I wonder if the mysterious owner of the car and warehouse is Mercedes themselves?

I asked about the number of cars that Mercedes-Benz owned in their classic collection and was told “many thousands. Some are on display at the Museum, but others are in storage. In fact we have two warehouses not far from here where we have cars stored.”

Didn't some versions of the W196 have inboard front drum brakes - which would obviously also need front driveshafts?
This car (chassis 00006)was displayed in the National Motor museum at Beaulieu in the 1980's (on loan/gift from MB museum)and was subsequently sold to Anthony Bamford (JCB)
He later sold it via a broker in Paris to a French collector called Jacky Seton for an alledged 20 million dollars. He sold it at a considerable loss (the market having "corrected") to a German colletor called Friedholm Loh.
The trail then goes cold but was rumoured subsequently to be somewhere in the Middle East.
I believe this was the car that appeared at the 1999 Goodwood Revival meeting driven by Willie Green. They were unable to get it to fire on all 8 cylinders so it didn't really achieve anything special.
So it doesn't really stack up that it is a "barn find" that has been sitting in a warehouse for the last 30 years.
