More snow tyre questions

Whats happened to this tyre and can it still be used ?it appears to have cracks just in the bottom of the groove not in the tread block,it doesn't look structual to me.

par for the course for old wets, no problem to use as long as the cracks are not all the way round the tyre wall like mine were last season.

Generally speaking, cracking in car tyres is relatively harmless to their overall performance. As long as the tyre cracks remain on the surface of the tyre and do not extend to the substrate material, the tyres are safe to use.
Tyres are made of rubber and all rubber products eventually crack. It is just a natural occurrence that is bound to happen over time. It does not mean the tyres are useless and must be replaced. Several factors contribute to this process. In some car tyres the cracking begins earlier than in others and is more extensive.

Hi Tim
Yes i have a new set i bought for last year but never used them on DTEC i have used the set that i posted obove twice in three years ,just call me lucky i have not had to sit in a soden water locked seat.I have been saving the new wets for what i concidered the more important DTEC but as it don't seam to rain much i'm not doing that now. so the reason i'm asking is as i am racing next weekend i was trying to make my mind up wether to use the new ones or take the used set that would be safer on as greasy castle combe.

Ivor shall i have a poke around with a screw driver see how deep the cracks are.as i say i think they have had three heat cycles in three years.all of them last year.The tread blocks don't look that rounded in the picture.

You need to check how deep the cracks are with something maybe not a screwdriver but something that's not sharp (obviously)
The picture your showing doesn't appear to show very deep cracks though
