Yes, the same as marshalling but the overall picture is silverstone cutting costs.Do you actually get to watch the racing? worse case for me would be ending up doing running the carpark and missing the actual racing.
I don't know about bike meetings, but given that this isn't a marshalling initiative then it appears to be security and spectator marshalling based. Spectator marshalling has always been available to volunteers so no change there. Any security roles are likely to be on the outer edges of the circuit development as the high profile and high risk areas are likely to be covered by experienced staff.
I suspect the idea that you'll be involved in making the event run smoothly may leave you a bit disappointed, especially after three twelve hour days...

As I understand it only G4 security will be running the car parks

This is very interesting, are you refering specifically to Silverstone event(s) and these two GP's or do you, do this at other venues aswell?I suspect the idea that you'll be involved in making the event run smoothly may leave you a bit disappointed, especially after three twelve hour days...

I ask as if its the former you might be able tell me what to expect in more deatil than I have at present, it does sound like you are trying to give us the heads up on disappointment. Genuine question and not the minority "trip-hazzard" that comes up on Ph's from time to time.
For more info....I can't comment on bikes as I don't do bike meetings.
I'm a marshal though and I am part of a large crew of predominately unpaid volunteers who make motorsport work in the UK week after week.
As this isn't a marshalling initiative, then it means that there won't be any normal marshal roles, so trackside, assembly, startline, pits etc. will be run as normal by marshals who have been through the normal selection process. Timekeeping will remain the same as well.
The next layer is security, the inner gates are usually staffed by the guys who have done the event before, they are difficult areas to work with lots of "don't you know who I am" potential and the need to be able to remember what passes give access to where (which isn't as straightforward) as it might seem plus the inevitable security risks (the pits, paddocks, race control etc are swept for explosives on a regular basis over the three days). I think these guys are usually paid. They may cover off some of the outer gates with inexperienced freebie staff but that is likely to leave you out on a car park gate I'd guess.
You can volunteer as a spectator marshal anyway, lots of car and race clubs send groups. These guys are paid the same as marshals so £15 for the three days. Some of these guys get a good view, some don't - I'd be guessing but I imagine it's like security, the experience folk get the roles closer to the track where there is more risk of problems. There are a fair number of BiB who are spectator marshals.
I'm not sure what other roles SCL would be looking to cover, catering is all sub contracted and I guess it might be standing around in the spectator areas directing people around or programme selling but I would be surprised if it's anything more central than that.
If you want to get involved in motorsport generally then look at http://www.marshals.co.uk/ lots of clubs run taster days which will give you an idea of the roles available. There are plenty of other roles other than standing trackside and pushing cars out the gravel and lots of ways to get involved and make a difference.

They few i spoke to last year genuinely didn't know, even where on the track they were working.- All things G4S temps dont seem to be.
They told me they were dropped off by mini bus and told they'd get picked up from the same spot x amount of hours later, the waterproofs/footwear they had was inappropriate for the weather last year, and they seem to of spent the weekend being treated by s
t from their employers and the public.Some interesting views on here. Cost cutting is an issue for any event, but why not reward people with the experience instead - I wouldn't be buying a race ticket otherwise, so it's ok in my book. I didn't hear anyone suggest the Games Makers at the Government-funded Olympics being all about cost cutting, despite some organisations making a lot of money from the event ;-) If it means Silverstone make a profit from the F1, then I'm ok with that.
