Firstly, Stirling is an 83 year old man, he quickly realised what he had said and apologised. What is and is not 'PC' has changed alot and i know many of the older generation stumble over this. In his day this word may have been used for gay, or equally just for a more effeminate male, clearly he thinks a more masculine figure would play him best.
I understand his point, that perhaps the best actor is one who understands what it is to drive fast cars and chase girls. I don't really see anything wrong apart from the accidental use of a word that is no longer deemed acceptable.
Homophobia is not acceptable, but getting up in arms when someone of his age makes a mistake is just an easy news story. My grandparents are anything but racist and yet still occasionally are confused over which terms are acceptable or not. To deem them racist, or Stirling homophobic, because of one word in a throwaway comment, is unfair and damaging.
