I'm intrigued by the McLaren situation. It clearly isn't as they had hoped, however I don't believe they necessarily thought they'd be out front at the beginning of the season. Logic dictates that any team carrying over an existing car with updates will start the season stronger. McLaren chose not to do this as they believed they'd run out of development potential during the season. So perhaps they believe that Red Bull et al will also reach a plateau, whereas they can sail past and keep developing.
If this is correct, then there are a two key points to consider:
1) McLaren must be prepared to develop all through the season - so resources for 2014 presumably aren't a problem.
2) If the other teams take points off each other early season, then reach a plateau where McLaren overtake them, they might have a free run through the remainder of the season with little competition.
The deciding factor will be if/when the rest of the field reach that plateau and whether McLaren can actually develop their car to the potential they believe it has.
A looooong way to go yet.

Isn't the RB9 an evolution of the RB5, and the Lotus E21 an evolution of the Renault R30? I'm pretty certain neither are clean sheet designs?
