I read that a Nascar driver has also been killed in an accident at a dirt-oval event this weekend. Bad times.

I think you are referring to Jason Leffler, which was a couple of weeks ago

Yeah but also how many people have died on the road during this "bad week for motorsport" or died of cancer, heart failure, lung failure, stroke etc etc. The trouble with modern life is that we somehow have convinced ourselves that death is some kind of failure of life to overcome an historical anomaly that shouldnt happen any more.

To live a life that is fulfilled you have to do stuff; take risks, fail, get up and dust yourself down then do stuff again......but that makes life DANGEROUS, be f**king happy that life is like that. The people that have died lived their dream, they LIVED, so also be happy for them because sometimes people dont get up when they fall down.

Its JUST death, aint so bad, cos its connected to life and living, and is as natural as the hills and the rivers.

Get a life and stop sounding so down.

I see where you're coming from, but that doesn't make each death less sad as a result. Remember motorsport is just that, a sport. It is dangerous, of course, but that certainly doesn't mean injuries and deaths are ok.

No one said injuries and death are OK. But there is a modern tendency to identify with the families of total strangers who have lost someone we never knew - and possibly never heard of until their death brought their name to our attention.

As someone who knew both drivers (Le Mans and Paul Ricard) in a professional capacity - its extremely sad and shocking. and I'm sure the families of both gentlemen involved would want the motorsport community to remember them for what they did, and what we will no longer for fortunate to see again.

Can't understand the points being made above - when I hear on the news of another soldier killed abroad, I also feel sad for the friends & family involved. I didn't know the soldier, but doesnt stop me from showing respect and commpassion.

But there is a modern tendency for the media to encourage us all to wring our hands and weep and wail for what are, after all, complete strangers.

The issue is worse when reporting the death of children.
