I don't get that: if I'm reading you correctly, you seem to be deducing that the engine should sound good just because it's bound to sound different from the simulation. That's partly because they won't use full revs unless they have to, because of the fuel flow limit, so they'll short shift as soon as it makes no difference to the power output then just run it out in top gear for the speed down the straight.Shouldn't have gone with a fuel flow limit, they should have just mandated the fuel amount - "Here's 30 litres, you need to finish the race without adding any more", would have been a lot more fun.
I know that the noise an F1 car makes isn't the be all and end all but I have to say that one of the things that first grabbed my attention and hooked me on F1 was the awesome scream of the V10's I still remember the hairs standing up on the back of my neck as the first cars hit the track for the warmup session at the 1998 British GP. The noise was electrifying. Seeing the rooster tail of spray and the howling car accelerating down the Hangar straight will stay with me forever.
Since then, the V8's seemed like a massive letdown compared to the V10's. They seemed flatter, loud yes but they'd lost that music. (Youtube a 1999-2000 Mclaren Merc for example) and now, with Dyson seemingly the engine manufacturer of choice for 2014, I just feel a bit 'meh' towards it all.
One of the biggest motivations for me attending a Grand Prix was for the noise. It was almost worth the entry fee on its own. Now I'm not so sure.
I'm sure people will be quick to point out that we've had turbos in the past and the screaming engines we've become used to are a relatively new phenomenon but as someone who grew up in the 90's, F1 has lost a big piece of what made it special to me.

Granted, its not the same as the new engine clips but its a flipping world away from the Monaco clip.
TL;DR Lets wait until the engine is in a car, on the track being driven hard before we start b
hing about sound.I do think the engines are going to cause a bit of a shake up and bring something to the racing.

I can only assume that the people who really think otherwise have only ever heard an F1 car on TV.The only thing I know is that one of the reasons (along ith extra power because the old one was underpowered) gp3 now run a n/a v6 this year to replace the old engine is because everyone complained the 2 litre turbo they used in the old one sounded rubbish.
We can only hope the f1 boys make a better fist of it

Any viable form of exhaust turbocharging is going to mute the engine note considerably - you're taking energy out of the exhaust after all; it's physics. The days of listeneing to an F1 car and wondering how it's keeping itself in one piece, while the sound simultaneously shakes your internal organs are very nearly over unfortunately.We can only hope the f1 boys make a better fist of it

I can only assume that the people who really think otherwise have only ever heard an F1 car on TV.The sound is a big part of the event when i have attended GP's, not so much bothered on TV. It wont stop my enjoyment watching it on tv but it will stop me going to future GP's to be honest. Can't say for sure until i hear one live, but my motivation to see one live is at an all time low. Thank God there are other ways to hear high power v8/10/12's at a race track than modern f1.
