So, chatting with a mate and it seems that motorsport (and general motoring) has really become vastly reliable, more so than ever before.

In MotoGP and F1 it's very rare that an engine lets go, it's usually some hydraulics failure and that's that.

And with the new Turbo[t] engines in F1 next year, the revs a lower, the boost and power isn't amazing, and it's all about efficiency...

...But to turn that on it's head, what would they need to stick through a 1.6 to make them "on the edge"? That there'd be always a chance of an engine giving out?

Stick a couple of quarter inch nuts down the comp end of the turbo, that would put them over the edge.

This is a reflection of modern automotive engineering across road cars too. Car do not break down as often as they once did which is why the AA and RAC sell you loads of other stuff these days.
