I thought it would be nice to start a thread about Adrian newey. As Vettel wins its easy to forget the man that designs his car. My first memory of him was the Spanish GP 1990 when Murray walker did an intro on the Leyton house and describing the aerodynamics of the car.

We've had some great designers, Ross brawn, Colin chapman and Gordon Murray.

One of the old school, Gioacchino Colombo responsible for:
Desgin of the Alfetta 158 engine for Alfa Romeo's GP cars (1938-1951)
Designer of Ferrari's first V12 that became the Colombo-Ferrari used in Sportscar endurance racing, GTs and road cars from 125, 250, 275, 330, 365, 400, 412 and 512 from 1947-1995.
Abarth 750 twin-cam engine road and race engine.
Designer of the legendary Maserati 250F (1954-1960)
Then moved to MV and was responsible for the design and engineering of MV Agusta's hugely successful 500cc GP racing (Surtees, Hailwood, Agostini etc).
Edited to add. Newey was also the designer of the successful March Indycar and later he was fired by (March) Leyton House half way through the 1990 F1 season as the unreliable CG901 was struggling, taken on by Williams and the rest as they say is history. I wonder which of the two old Repton school boys have made the most money. Clarkson or Newey?

Probably worthwhile pointing out that Newey has one of the top teams in F1 around him. I'd go as far as to stick my neck out and say that RedBullRacing would still win with him missing.C
One man cannot do everything. Adrian has a whole team around him and there must be many unsung heros within that team?
I would imagine he has some key personnel that have come up with great design ideas over the years. It can't just be him!
However, he is obviously widely respected in the arena so must play a significant part into the cars success.

Without Newey they would be one of the top teams but 'THE' team for the last four years? not a chance.C
I can't remember the exact figures but the statistics say something silly like only 2 WCC's have been won in the last 20 odd years where Brawn or Newey were not involved in the car - it might be longer!

They're some achievements on the CV's of Brawn and Newey.
Clearly not just on their own but even so that is a hell of a collection between them.
Agreed, absolutely incredible list. Just goes to show how important they are as key figures in their respective teams.Clearly not just on their own but even so that is a hell of a collection between them.
Clearly, there are 100's of other employees, all making valuable contribution, but it's telling that only 4 of the last 20 (soon to be 21) seasons have been won by teams that neither Newey or Brawn are not employed in.
Both Newey and Brawn are also very humble and down to earth blokes too.

As brilliant as he is, Newey alone cannot turn dunces like Marussia or Caterham into championship winners.
Newey is no doubt at the top of his field. But he can't do his job without proper funding, management, administrative support, and a hive of talented technical staff.
By the same token, Alonso/Hamilton/Raikkonen/Button/Vettel in a dunce car and a poorly-run team will never get anywhere.

At McLaren, he was constrained; he was also well-matched by the might of Brawn and Byrne at Ferrari. At Red Bull, he had free reign to build and run his own design team in whatever fashion he liked. But even at Red Bull, it wasn't until 2009 (three years after he joined the team) that they had a competitive car.
Looking at Gaz.'s list I think that there are a couple of times there where one or other of them had an input into the car that won the WCC even if they were not the person credited with the final design, that said it is still an impressive division between them!
No Newey and Brawn would not be able to work their mojo on the cars without the money behind them but that they were able to get to the money says a lot as well. That it took Newey 3 years to drag the Red Bull up the grid is not a surprise. year one he would have been one arm behind his back, year two making everything gel and then year three designing and putting all those factors together for a World beating car the following season.

It is crazy how no one can beat the car that newey designs for red bull but that he only got a couple of championships with Mclaren at the early part of his time there (not counting 2007 of course).
McLaren matrix-manage their design departments, which results in fanatical attention to detail in certain areas but sometimes the components don't marry up.It's like they can design the best individual waterpump, radiator and sidepod, but the three bits don't form the best cooling solution overall.
Newey moved to RBR specifically to have control over everything - something McLaren can't permit because of how they choose to work. $10m a year to lavish on lightweight e-types and things like that can't be painful either, I'd warrant...

However you look at it, Newey is on the cusp of his 10th Formula One title. Those titles having been won with 3 different teams. That he also designed championship winning IMSA GTP and Indycars (including taking the Indy 500) doesn't make a bad footnote either.
Surely what he now needs to do is to switch teams again and settle the argument even more definitively?

I recon it's in the other teams interests to pay for him to go and do an Americas cup yacht.Surely what he now needs to do is to switch teams again and settle the argument even more definitively?
