Mallory Park forced into administration

Noise nannies triumph and the future of a classic track hangs in the balance

So we have to begin the day with bad news. Following much legal wrangling, Mallory Park has been put into administration.

Back in the glory days...
Back in the glory days...
Its recent issues stem from a 1985 Noise Notice. Whilst Mallory had reached a happy compromise with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council to work within the notice, some newer residents weren't so accommodating. They reputedly applied for a 'rigid interpretation' of the 1985 Notice which Mallory then breached five times in 2012. The full story on the background can be found in our previous story here.

In August of this year, Mallory Park Motorsport Limited (MPML) was taken to court on the charges and found guilty. Whilst the right was given to taken the decision to a higher court, the decision's direct corollary was that Mallory was reduced to 84 operational days a year (40 racing Sundays, 40 testing Wednesdays and four racing Saturdays); to be profitable, it needed to be open for 160 days a year.

The events that followed have a horrible predictability to them. With Mallory Park unable to open, track and experience days had to be cancelled. With fewer events being held, Mallory was receiving less income. Then, despite an advancing three-stage recovery plan with the council's approval, a refusal from the land owners to 'make a substantive offer' on reducing the rent forced the plan to be halted.

84 opening days a years wasn't enough for Mallory
84 opening days a years wasn't enough for Mallory
So a combination of rising costs (its annual lease rent has risen 40 per cent over the past eight years) and reduced revenue thanks to the noise legislation has left Mallory with 'no firm visibility for 2014 and beyond'. Consequently its directors have placed the track into administration.

The process is being undertaken by Kingston Smith and Partners LLP. Its representative Ian Robert said: I will be working with all the stakeholders to ensure that Mallory Park will see racing again. I hope the administration process can assist in finding a solution which will be beneficial to all parties concerned."

If the residents maintain their staunch opposition to a fully functioning Mallory Park, the track's future looks bleak. Unsurprisingly, an e-petition is already up and running here with nearly 35,000 signatures. You will be kept updated as and when we hear any more.

How much do they want for it?
I've got some savings.

Bloody disgusting. Who the hell moves next to a racetrack and complains about the noise? That's like moving next to Heathrow and whinging about the planes!

It's not for sale... yet.

It's the management company that has gone bust - the track is owned by a group of old boys running a property development company. The management company just leased it from them.

We live in a gimpocracy. Government of gimps by gimps. If you don't believe me, just look at the leaders of the three main political parties....

Our son was due to be racing this weekend, last race of the season championship deciders. He was not in the running for the championship in his class, he had a complete mare last time out at Brands. But for those in with a shout its a disaster the weekend has been cancelled.

IIRC this isn't quite as clear-cut as the Mallory PR might have you believe.

Not justifying the complaints; but, if you moved next to a race circuit on the understanding they only operated on a limited number of days and this was suitable for you, but the circuit operates regularly outside of this, then it might change your perspective. That's my understanding anyway.

Am I also right in understanding that the circuit only operated on certain Weds, Sat and Sun? No running Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri, ever? And that this is restricted to at most 84 days per annum? Ouch.

What about non-motorsport stuff as a booster - they had a couple of evening triathlons etc, perhaps more of these events would help keep it viable?

Oh trust me, they do. No different there but then BAA have a bit more money to fight the nimbys.

Indeed.

Nothing to do with NIMBYS and everything to do with taking the piss.

This story seems to take a different angle to the last one. From the limited amount I understand about this, my sympathies aren't really with Mallory.

It happens everywhere sadly.
I'm just down the A303 from Thruxton and they have one of the lowest noise level restriction in the country and can also only run 12 race events a year.

But the track has been there (in race form) since 1950.
I wonder how many of the locals that complain have lived there since pre 1950?

Quite. Unfortunately it's not the first time either. I'm pretty sure other circuits have had their number of potential race meetings slashed due to the Noise Police.

(Off-topic - great shot of Baby Bertha. Surely one of the most outrageously brutal-looking racing machines ever devised, but sexy as hell, and hugely successful in the hands of dear old Gerry. biggrin)

That'll be due to the fact that the press release is from Mallory.

People in Belgium actually did that for both tracks and airports... I really don't understand those people, go and live next to tracks/airports because the terrrain is sold cheaper, then start complaining because of the noise...

Next thing they'll start whinging about electrical cars making to much tyre noise above a certain speed as well!!!

They can now build a range of luxury 1 & 2 bed flats and 3, 4 & 5 bed homes on the track and give each road a track-related name and then hark on about how wonderful it was when the track was used in its brochures.

IMO, the builders of any news houses near the track would have knocked up some cheapo buildings overnight, with no additional sound proofing or sound barriers and then just shrugged their shoulders at the noise problem, citing it's not their fault.

Erm, Mallory Park's closing had nothing to do with people complaining about noise.

Damn shame, but it does seem to me that they haven't helped themselves. Running outside the agreed number of days is asking for trouble. Having said that though, I'll gladly sign anything to try and keep Mallory Park going.
