This is not a thread to bash Pirelli however did the Bridgestone's or Michelin's ever fail in similar ways to the flat spotted tyre on Perez's car at the weekend? I only ask as I do not remember anything like this happening before? Only Kimi's front causing suspension failure due to a flatspot.
Tyres used to get flat spotted in a big way and never fail. As said, Kimi had that issue in a McLaren and the tyre stayed together until the suspension fell apart with the vibration. Lap after lap of punishment but the tyre stayed together.
I think there is just as much chance that the failing tyre caused the massive lock up, as it being the other way around. I cant see how flat spotting to any degree would cause a properly built tyre to fail so quickly.

2007 Turkish GP Lewis Hamilton's RF tyre tread shredded off due to 'chunking' because that tyre took too much abuse.
I wonder if Perez suffered from the same problem because the came corner was also taking a lot of abuse and a cause of concern. Perhaps the structure was already was already on the limit else it must have been some flat spot.

Prost had a puncture and the technicians found nothing wrong.
After Rosberg's (team mate to Prost) tyre shredded off, Mansell's tyre let go a lap later and was supposed to pit in reaction to Rosberg.

But Pirelli have been asked to create tyres that don't last long distances. They did have tyres that could almost do a full race, but were asked to make them less durable.One would think that almost 30 years later tyres should last more than 10 or 20 laps without failing.
Fact is that it used to happen so infrequently that we can all recount the one or two occurrences in the last 30 or 40 years of a tyre letting go. Recently it's happened so often that we've lost count. Regardless of how long the tyre should retain its grip it's down right lethal for the tread to fly off the carcass and shouldn't happen.

In any case, that was a change of opinion that led to the tyres being run hard for a long distance until they simply wore out. Hardly what is happening today.

The FiA want the tyres to contribute to the show, but this is now becoming dangerous. Pirellis hands are tied, the FiA need to take action so that tyres can't get into this state.
