Just read that Brian Hart has died after a long illness.

He was a very capable driver, but really made his name building engines.

His 415T series powered Ayrton Senna in his first year in F1. His opposite number at BMW in the turbo years reckoned that on a hp per pound spent basis, Brian Hart was well ahead of the BMW works.

He went on to make some v10 engines in the naturally aspirated era. These never had the same impact though.

The man who put Harlow on the map, he has been in a care home for the past few years so not unexpected news. I would like to think others could achieve what he did in the future in F1, sadly that will never be the case. The F1 turbo hit the headlines but will be best remembered for his Formula 2 motor.

An unsung hero.

Those engines were beating the might of Honda and BMW in F2 in the 70s and 80s.

That 415T took Toleman and Senna to a couple of podiums, and his V10 was often a better unit for the Arrows and Jordans than the engines they were given from the likes of Porsche and Peugeot.

I'm not sure if his company ever made money....I can't imagine the sales v R+D investment looked great, but he must have lived a very rich life.
