Many PHers Road Rally?
Discussion
Nav'd from 78-83 in Yorkshire (ANCC) then a little in 2007-2009 but found that my eyesight deterioration has led to me getting 'mal de nav' so had to can it. Took my Saab 93 out for 3 rallies in 08 with my (then) 16 y.o. stepson as nav. Managed a 35th out of 75 starters on the Moonlight. Nowdays live too far to bother spectating / marshalling so confine my rallying to WRC spectating and the RAC
Was that Andy Ritchie on the Preston by any chance magpies?
What area are you in cknotty? I'm currently doing the South West championship and a couple of the rounds have been really well represented, entries wise.
Entries for me a currently in for the Ystwyth (daytime road rally around sweet lamb) and the Barcud starting from Tregaron, had too many DNF's this year, need my luck to change! 5 DNF's from 10 events!

Thanks to living outside the UK nowadays I don't get to compete as much as I would like.
Was doing an average of 2 road rallies per month in the mid 2000's, culminating in us winning the Sebron championship in 2005
Used a Peugeot 205 GTi for most of the events and, thanks to a driver who knew the car backwards we had some pretty good luck, I think only 2 DNFs in the entire few years we competed.

I do, but you will probably recognise me from FB and BRF Pidge.
Started as a driver in Historics in 2006 then moved seats when my Car needed rebuilding in 2010, Navigating mainly on Road Rallies in the North of England and going back into Historics too as a Navigator on HRCR stuff.
I've banged on a bit on here about Road Rallying when ever I got the chance, to try and bring it to peoples attention, but getting to feel it's pretty much a lost cause. It seems to totally get by most PH's and you can't describe it properly without straying into dodgy territory on a Forum which is used by certain elements of the press to make a point.

When ever the 30mph average is mentioned to people they seem to turn their noses up. Just wish they would come and see the roads that you have to do it on!velocemitch said:
Darkie Lewis I expect?........Andy is from the North West. I think he may have 'retired' now too.
Both of them good at bending BMW,s...
Both north, close enough! I spoke to Andy on the Eagle a couple of weeks ago, he's making a come back, got a new BMW and got the cage in, just slowly building it up when he can! Quick in the old car mind! Both of them good at bending BMW,s...

Not trying to advertise, but do many people on here use the British road rallying website? Or even the Facebook page?
I follow the FB stuff and read reports of the events I've done. It's a good resource and a credit to you.
As I've mentioned most PH's don't seem to 'get' it. There is a reasonable amount of interest in the Historic side probably because the Cars are more interesting. The Classic forum regularly gets discussions about what Car to use and the nature of the events, these discussions don't really happen for the Modern stuff on here.
You might be right about the 30MPH bit putting people off, I mean after all we just trundle slowly about the countryside trying not to be early don't we, it's got to be a bit boring doing that.
... or maybe it's the Cars we use, I expect there are a fair number of Eyebrows raised when you mention that three quarters of the Cars in the top ten of an event were Protons... er what!!
Mind you Club Rallying generally doesn't get much discussion either, when a dedicated Rallying section of the forum was suggested, it wasn't supported by many and the management took no notice. The WRC stuff gets lots of posts which is fair enough, but many don't seem to be able to see past it.

My first marshal's job was a PC on the 1985 Costa, if anyone else is old enough to remember that one
I used to navigate a few years ago (well, lots of years ago actually) events in Derbyshire, and Yorkshire mostly. That followed a year as the sack'o spuds in the NORC Comp Safari championship. After road rallies I went on to stage rallies which finished when I moved south.
I now stick to marshalling, radio, stage commander etc on events, I simply don't have the money to compete any more.

A shame, I for one would welcome a sub section for Rallying (Road and others). I compete in Targa Rallies in the East of England and would like to do a few road rallies and ultimately plan to take part in stage rallying at some point.
The sub section for club motorsport might be the place but it does seem to be mostly circuit focused.

Loved this revue of a recent event by a famous Road Rallyist from the good old days.http://www.britishroadrallying.com/gp-memorial-201...
I am still involved in the road rally scene. Did well in my first proper season of the East Midlands Championship but then had to move jobs to the North East where the scene is completely dead.
Just the Odd Hexham 12 car but even the last two haven't run due to lack of entries.
The problem is people don't want to publicise our sport and then wonder why it's slowly dying a death.
There are so many petrol heads on this web site, and how many even know it exists? I'm sure half of PH would be having a go if they knew about it!

Endurance trial rallying is something I'm seriously considering taking part in. I've grown up on international rallying so I know the costs and its beginning to look like the better option. Low cost, lots of seat time, standardish cars and basically stage rallying. What's not to like?confucuis said:

What's not to like? The ERRC is a good option for those living south of the midlands, but up north we have no Endurance events anymore. also the road sections have started to become a token gesture too, which basically means if you haven't got a rover and a fair bit of cash to throw at it you won't be competitive, which is a bit of a shame. The concept was excellent though.
pwig is exactly right though I reckon most PH people have very little idea what goes on after midnight on some of the countries finest back roads..... Apart from the dogging of course....
