Just wondering if anyone knows what material is used in F1 or other single seaters to protect the driver from the heat of the engine bay etc? (If any?) is it some sort of nasa style sheet that they apply to the tub or is it more like insulation? I was doing some general research into heat retention and protection and was wondering what is used.

A combination of airflow around the engine bay and the tub, and plenty of gold foil like this http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/heat-shie...

You might like to try and research data on what materials reflect which wavelengths of light (heat being infra-red light). Might give you some ideas

It will be a variety of materials. Some composite parts are now have Zircotec coatings directly applied
