race/rally car for the road
Discussion
OK, this may be a rather childish question but, what top ten cars (currently available) would you describe as true group N rally cars or near track cars but road legal? I'm thinking of cars that are purchased for road use but are either manufactured in such a way as to be easily and cheaply prepared for serious rally or track or such a good design (like the McClaren F1) that they are more race than street.
I imagine the M3 CSL, group N qualifier production models (Evo, STI etc.) might fit this mix, maybe even the Elise. Loaded magazine did something like this with an old M3 modded and turning in times on a par with GTRs.
What I'd like to own is a four seater, four door saloon/hatchback that pootles to the shops but can also go quite quickly and with a bit of cash spent, could conceivably turn in a 6 min 30 sec Nurburgring lap. OK, maybe just a low 7 min lap :-)
(Childish obsession with Nurburgring fap time...) :-)

Subaru are still making Group-N/R4 homologated Imprezas for production class rallying, not sure of any others.
Nurburgring times aren't really what they're designed for though if thats your goal.
ETA: Having said that, the current STI did well at the Nurburgring 24h with a dominant class win and 18th overall. So the potential is obviously there.

e92 M3 road car modded by Schirmer will do sub 7 @ 'ring on road rubber, naturally is quicker & well into the 6s on slicks, I'm sure he could do it on a saloon rather than the coupe if wished.
