Wales Rally GB - entries full

Record entries for next month's event boost Wales Rally GB's reputation as one of the world's great rallies

Wales Rally GB 2015 kicks off next month, starting from Llandudno on November 12 and finishing just down the road in Deeside on November 15. As you probably already know, PH will be there courtesy of a Sunday Service at Llandudno on November 15 and there's PH interest too in the shape of Tony Jardine's Group N Mitsubishi Evo IX. Also joining the fun will be Haymarket colleague Lizzie Pope, co-driving the number 252 Vauxhall Corsa with James Newbould and joining a diverse field featuring everything from a Hillman Avenger to the inevitable Subaru Imprezas and Ford Escorts. We'll be hearing about both their experiences on the event and - if their schedule permits - will hopefully be seeing them at Sunday Service too.

Another entrant PH is looking out for!
Another entrant PH is looking out for!
And this is the beauty of the event; from privateers like Lizzie to World Rally Championship stars from the world over, WRGB and the Network Q WRGB National Rally that follows in its tyre tracks both have packed entry lists. According to a suitably chuffed sounding press release from the organisers, 78 cars representing 22 countries will be competing the 19 stages of the main event. This is apparently the biggest international entry in years and, boasts the release, "underlines the event's escalating esteem since its successful move to a new base in north Wales in 2013." Recently crowned WRC champion Sebastien Ogier will be looking to put his Polo on the top of the podium to make it three victories on the trot; those attempting to spoil his party will include teammate and former winner Jari-Matti Latvala, not to mention Kris Meeke and Elfyn Evans who've both had strong seasons so far.

Add to that the 85 cars and crews of the National Rally and you have a spectacle worth tramping through a Welsh forest for. The WRGB website has all the info you need to plan your trip, including a stage-by-stage breakdown with information on timings, parking and exactly how far you'll need to hike to get to the best spectator spots.

In truth, I'm not sure any of the current WRC events qualify as a 'great event' anymore. Watered/ dumbed down for modern audiences/ media.
However, still worth going to watch the top guys 'on it', as their speed and commitment is awesome.

The organisers press releases have often qualified for MWM's pointless press release of the week.

Record entries my arse- when we had a WRC round worthy of the name 220plus entries were common. And the event didn't just pootle round a bit of Wales either; in fact it came within 200yards of where I am sitting now on the North York Moors, as well as Midlands, Scotland, Northumbria , Lakes etc.

Was better in my day.

Cars aren't exciting anymore.

True - but we are right! Modern rallying is a pathetically pale shadow of what it was- why pretend otherwise? I'm sure some people will enjoy WRC lite and good luck to them - butI wouldn't cross the road to see it, frankly.

Well I must say I'm looking forward to it. I would have liked to do the old RAC when it was about but I wasn't old enough, now I'm able its quite exciting. My first time watching was '95 when I saw Colin screaming through the woods. A sight I will never forget. Anyway better get on got to finish the car.

Cheers

So why comment on things you don't like do the exact same thing with btcc threads. Fair enough nothing is as good as the good old days in your eyes but that doesn't mean that people today like what is on offer. Stick to watching classic stuff and leave the people who actually enjoy modern sports to enjoy without people like you say its st all the time.

So ...if I have an opinion I shouldn't share it unless it coincides with yours? You're quite right - I don;t think either BTCC or rallying is as good as its predecessor. But that doesn't mean old is automatically good and new is worse - which is why I'm happy to say that drag racing and hillclimbing are in fare better shape than when I first watched them , that some , but not all club racing is excellent - well done 750MC- and that club rallying can still be a joy to watch. Other good news is that both Oulton Park and Cadwell have never looked better .

And sorry , but if I read such utter crap about this years Rally of Wales being record breaking I won't leave it unchallenged . It's sort of what people do on fora like this - point out inaccuracies .

I gather it's well known that Michele Mouton, in her WRC organisational capacity, is getting well tired of listening to the current crop of whingeing 'Sebastiens' constantly moaning about "being first on the road", "having to drive through the dust of the previous car", "too many long stages in the dark" etc, etc.

As a veteran of the old school she must feel like a Mum who's been handed a crowd of spoiled 'kiddie' brats to sort out! That was the strength of the so-called 'Old Guard' - the likes of Roger, Timo (Makinen), Russell and Jimmy. They simply took whatever a rally threw at them as 'the challenge of rallying' and just got stuck into it.

That's why we loved them and the rallies they competed on.

But you come up with the same stuff all the time which puts off people who actually are interested in watching it, it gets a bit tiresome hearing the same crap over and over again.

A "record"entry yet I can't seem to find an entry list anywhere! I don't suppose anyone else can find one? (Not the national's entry list by the way) I've seen that one.

The WRC field hasn't been released yet. But its going to be the same cars as on every event so far this year for the WRC field. WRC2/3 & Junior is included too, but some drivers may opt out of competing.

I do understand that primarily the entries will be similar to other WRC rounds but it's nice to see a confirmed list.

Yes i still use the car for road rallies. I used it it september for the Mercian Road Rally in northamptonshire and it did the VK in Derbyshire earlier in the year. I haven't done anything different to it for this event.
