Female Drivers?
Discussion

Seeing as there is very little support for women in motorsport I don't think it could ever be considered sexist.
Very little support???
Could you quantify that? Yes, there are very few female drivers, but on the flip side, they tend to get much more PR than their male counterparts, simply because they are female.
Look at Susie Stoddard in F3. Never won a race in FRenault, yet still got the budget for F3, and claims to be a dead cert for GP2 next year, and F1 in 2007. How can someone who's never won a race at a half-decent level get such backing? You can be effing sure that if his name was Sean Stoddard he would have disappeared long ago.
2p worth

Who has now quit F3, just four races into the season. And will be concentrating on doing GP2 next season.
What's that all about? Why not keep going against the boys? Something strange there methinks.

Yep, very strange goings-on. Claimed to have an ankle injury which forced her out of a few F3 races, then went and did a Carrera Cup race in the guest Porsche Motorsport car ???
Then says that the backers have given up on this years' F3 because she wouldn't have been able to win the title (because she missed a few races) so they are now doing GP2 in 2006. Sorry, but she was NEVER going to win this year's F3 title.
She should at least have the decency to win a race at FRenault, then perhaps we'd all take a bit more seriously
That's 4p worth now!
I would like to say thanks to Racylady for answering the original question. As an aside, if you can't/don't want to answer the question posted, put your own posting and have your own solitary part groover rant about something that has been stuck up your arse for years. Do the world a favour and
off one time.

Rather rude reply don't you think?
I think the topic of a "lack of females" in motorsport is a genuinely interesting subject for discussion and, for me, it's a constant mystery as to why there aren't more of them taking part.
I have absolutely no doubt that girls can make as good racing and rally drivers as men and indeed, in past decades, there have been some excellent female drivers, especially in rallying. The question is, why are there so few now. I actually think that there are LESS females particapating in moptor sport now than there were in past decades. You only have to look at the entry lists for Brooklands in the 1920s and 1930s to see how many girls made up the grids in those days.

There were lots of female drivers in the 1920/1930's when being invovled in motorsport was a damn sight dangerous than it is today and it was based around the fact that you could afford to do it (not that much different to today). Only thing is, I get very frustrated with this forum as you post a fair and sensible question and all you get is people ranting about how crap something is. If you want to bad talk a particular driver etc and not answer the question, I am sure you can simply create your own post 'Driver X crap or what?' and rant away. I am trying to find information and drivers and like to say thanks to people that take the question/subject seriously.
The fact that there are so few girls involved in motor sport is down to the interests they develop as they grow up. Most girls tend not to get too excited by things automotive - especially in the motor sport side of things.
The situation in the 1920s and 30s was very different. In those days, motor sport was the preserve of the well heeled so it was almost completely restricted to the wealthy anyway. In the 1920s, there was an upsurge in females wanting to prove their worth against men in traditional male dominayed areas - especially to do with motoring and aviation. So, many well funded young women took up motor racing and flying as a way to prove their point - and they were very good at it.
That atitude faded away after World War 2 and ever since then the number of girls partcipating in such activities seems to have declined.

Ooh Handbags at dawn...
You started well with your initial question, then buggered it all up with the idiotic comment...
"Seeing as there is very little support for women in motorsport"
Please don't pretend that women have a hard time in motorsport, EVERYONE does, but most us just go about about the job anyway - we save our money to go racing because we can't get sponsorship. Some make the big time, and the payoff is huge, others make a decent living, which is great, because they indulge their passion AND get paid for it. Others work their arse off so that we can race at the weekends, foresaking holidays, new cars, bigger houses, etc.
Don't lecture on the difficulties women face in motorsport - not when I have seen a prominent Irish woman driver being flouted as the next F1 star on an Irish chat show about 6 years ago - she'd never won a major race EVER, and the week before Jonny Kane had won the BF3 title. She's still 'preparing' for F1, Kane struggled for years after winning the title and is only now getting regular drives, despite following the footsteps of Senna, Hakkinen etc.
PLEASE stop talking out of your backside.
