Hi
what oil do folks put in the hydratrack diff? Anyone know of the capacity from empty?

Also, I've a query on the cv joints - inboard and outboard - on the rear driveshafts. The joint is enclosed in a steel 'can', but it looks like it could be opened up to reveal the joint itself. So, are they meant to be sealed units and one of mine has just fallen apart, or are they meant to be split to grease them. If its the latter, what do you grease them with - common-or-garden grease or the graphite/moly stuff?

Thanks

Have you got CV joints or Hookes style UJs on the half shafts? If they're CVs, the main body of the CV joint is a cylindrical lump of steel bolted to the hub or diff and it should have a rubber bellows sealing this to the shaft. If it's a Hookes joint you'd find the half shaft and stub axle both end in a U shaped yoke with a 4-point center cross. On cars with inboard brakes the inner UJ is sometimes fitted with a cylindrical heat shield, this protects the UJ from heat and also keeps grease off the UJ away from the brakes.

Wonder if the can is something added to protect the rubber bellows from debris damage?

OK, badly described...not a can as in a bean-can shape but more a can of tuna shape, so 5" in diameter and maybe 2" thick

There is one at each end of the drive shafts, and they bolt to the diff at one and the hub at the other. The bellows are on the inside of the cv joints. All Tuscans are like this.

I only described them as 'cans' as there is a pressed steel/tin 'lid' top and bottom that on 3 of my cv joints is stuck on hard, but falls off on the 4th. I just want to know of they're meant to be sealed joints and I've got a loose 'lid', or if the 'lids' are meant to come off to re-pack the joints...and if the latter, what grease to repack with...

Sounds like you're describing a conventional lobro or equivalent CV joint. I'd expect the end opposite the bellows to be sealed, is that where this cover is that you mentioned? You'd normally regrease by unclipping the bellows rather than removing the CV to get at the other side, if that makes sense? No idea what grease, sorry. You can buy cute little sachets of grease to go with new CV joints so that might be one way to ensure you get the right stuff.
