This car had been running at the Speed Trials as long as I've been going and that's a long time. I'm sorry it has been wrecked but I'm sure it will live to run another day.

Glad the guy is ok. Some appalling comments on that article.

There was a bad crash at Castle Coombe action day today,

Video on Facebook, rumors saying a passenger has died but hopefully wrong, some of the comments are also pretty crappy.

There were a few emergency services coming through today, but nothing like as many as last weekend for the crash at Quarry.

They tried after the death in 2012, but popular demand forced them to recind the ban.

I was there two weeks ago in one of my filthy, gas-guzzling cars and expected a hard time. Nothing could be further from the truth. The 20mph speed limit appears to be merely a suggestion and they seem to have no parking enforcement whatsoever.

My wife Sheila and I have owned the Allard for 64 years and I have raced it for 64 years. This was the biggest crash I have had but it won’t put me off. And we will rebuild the car.
Bravo, very good attitude.

I wish there was better advanced notice for the Brighton Speed Trials. I always find out they've been on AFTER the event.

As far as I'm aware, always 1st Saturday in September.
Now, remembering that when the time comes..................................................
As with all things nowadays, all information and advance publicity, etc. seems to have migrated to the Facebook page.

Indeed.

Finding stuff out by accident is far less likely than it used to be. You have to already know about things so you can find out about them - which is rather counter intuitive.

I'll try and make a diary note for next year. Do they have any sort of website you can sign up to for alerts?

For some reason I thought it was sometime around October. I actually travel to the Brighton area quite frequently these days but I saw no posters, banners etc.

James Augustus Tiller, as they used to announce him at Valence Hill Climb, many years ago

I think the best web site would be the Brighton & Hove Motor Club - try this link https://bhmc.club/
They are the organising club.

eta: With regard to posters, banners, etc. I think that the (Green) Council would rather the event didn't happen, so don't allow roadside publicity. As previously mentioned, they did try to get it stopped, but ended up with a bloody nose due to public opinion being mostly in favour of the event carrying on. This may or may not have been (don't remember) immediately after someone unfortunately lost their life in a freak crash near the finish line, must have been 8 - 10 years ago.

2012, it was a female sidecar passenger and she was killed when the outfit went out of control after the finish line where the surface was undulating.

I thought the fatality 8-10 years ago referred to the dreadful accident involving Simon Law. Co- driving Tony Marsh’s Rovercraft Special (a March F2 chassis powered by a bored-out SD1 engine) he lost control at in excess of 170mph over the finish line with fatal consequences.

I was there and it feels like yesterday. Just checked on it - the 1993 meeting, nearly 30 years ago. Time seems to have its DRS fully open these days….

Way off topic I know, and sorry to touch on a sensitive subject, but for a while my dad owned the ‘March Allegro’ - an F2 March powered by an experimental A series turbo.

I remember that Allard as a boy, from the Eight Clubs meetings at Silverstone way back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Glad that he’s okay, and great that he’ll be rebuilding it.

Thanks.

I'll try and remember to look out for the event next year.

That seems a rather quick terminal speed for a 1/4 mile. I spoke to a chap who used to compete in the 70s with a F5000 car, back then he said the length was either 0.5 miles or a mile (I can't recall as this was 10+ years ago now), and he said he held the record for a while with a terminal speed of >170mph. Obviously that was also a single seater chassis but with a Chevy smallblock in the back, so surprised at 170mph over a standing quarter eek

Racing at 88 - brilliant stuff. Matches his attitude too - hope he manages to put it back together and is there next year!
