In F1 Racing a panel of experts have Button out on top at 14-12. The panel consists of current drivers/ex drivers/managers/team bosses etc.

Who is the better driver in your opinion? and why?

Personally I would say that Button is the better driver on the basis that he appears so much smoother behind the wheel and rarely seems to get the car out of shape. He also appears far more accomplished at overtaking than Coulthard. The fact Button's won zero races at this stage in his career, to date, is not untypical of quite a number of current and past F1 drivers yet a number say that because Coulthard has won 13 races, he's the better driver. Personally I don't buy this as I feel that the wins will come for Button in time.

It depends what you beleive makes a driver better. Button is certainly faster on a more consistent basis but DC has a great ability to give feedback of the car to the team. And as he has won races he is more of a fighter. Although button has shown his fighting spirit recently, espeicially at Spa.
If they were in a head to head race in identical cars my money would be on button but I reckon it would be a great battle

Thing is in current F1 you can only win if the car is capable of winning. Schumacher can't win this year in the Ferrari because it's not a race winning machine (except Indy, which was a farce).

Button, and I stand to be corrected by anyone who has got stats handy, has probably overtaken more people than anybody else in races with the exception of Kimi Raikonnen and possibly Montoya. He's certainly picked off some good drivers/cars in the races since they came back from the ban with an improved car.

So I'd say Button over Coulthard.

I will not rate Button AT ALL until he wins at least ONE race. At the moment he reminds me of Alesi, all promise but no results.

His qualifying performances in the latter part of this year have been great. I think he's lapped faster than the car can go.

i would go with button but i like him more and he comes across as a bit more of a fighter. Coulthard has had the best car for a number of seasons, think of the late ninetines, yet always looked second best. During his time at wiliams and mclaren he never looked as quick as his team mate and i think he suffers from no killer instinct. sure he can get feedback from a car and is a good team player but then so was ricardo patrese and how ever cared about him?

people remember the tryers, the chargers and the fighters, the villeneuves, the sennas and the alesis. I am sure button will win a race soon, and if he doesnt then to me it is not important. just like moss was never world champion, there are many things stopping a driver from winning, and for the last six yers it has been a german in a red car.

Coulthard without a doubt - one of the few drivers able to battle it out wheel to wheel with MS, something Button has failed miserably at.

DC's record pre F1 is far superior to Button's also - finished 2nd in the highest standard British F3 field of recent years (to Barrichello).

Still think Button has a lot to prove...

Hmmm but the question raises a further quandry.........

button IS a great driver, BUT he has been "brought up" in an era where F1 cars HAVE to be driven that way to get the most from them.
DC on the other hand MAY NOT have the "smoothness" of button but he has the experience of racing cars where the aero effect was less pronounced and they were able to close and overtake from right under the gearbox........

How about getting them into an A1 race and see what happens??

Good idea - but unfortunately, not very likely.

smooth has always been and always will be the fastest way in any racing car though.

I would love to see Button win. In the meantime I will reserve judgement on his capability until he gets at least one win under his belt.

I have got some footage of jenson driving around clay pigeon kart track, he could have only been about 7-8 ,i dont no whether he was old enough to race at the time but even back then he was just ultra smooth!

Is DC the only person to have fallen off the road on the formation lap?

I'd say Button rather than DC..DC has been in F1 for years, and achieved very little. Most of his teammates have beaten him quite soundly, and that to me is the sign of a not particularly good driver. He has had plenty of chances for going for the WC, but fluffed it every time... he's crud!

It will be interesting to see Button's qualifying and race performances in 2006 now that he's got Barrichello as a team mate. He'll have to step up his game if he's going to keep his "perceived" number 1 driver status as for all intents and purposes Barrichello is as quick and is a proven racewinner to boot.
