Silverstone is likely to lose three of its fabled corners if plans to redevelop the Northamptonshire venue are given the go-ahead next week.

Circuit owner British Racing Drivers Club will convene on Wednesday to discuss whether to grant a 150-year lease to developer St Mowdens Properties, which plans to build residential homes on the 800-acre site.

Details of specific housing plots have not yet been released, but the Daily Telegraph reports that they would be accommodated by cutting out Club, Abbey and Bridge corners.

WTF is Silverstone playing at?? seems to me they have definatley lost the plot on this one!!

Who in there right mind is going to want to by a house there?? Now I know silverstone village is pretty close to the track but the noise isn't too much of an issue from when I've been wondering round the village at GP's and Sportscar events.

But you can see it now...... Mr Smith buys a house at Bridge then sues - 'cos no one told him that the GP circuit in his back yard was gonna be noisey, and he can't get of his drive at weekends because of all these people that keep turning up.....

Am I being stupid - or does this seem like antoher 'well thought out' BRDC fk up??

So what will they replace that section of the circuit with?

Chris

Very wierd, sounds like complete bull especially when you read it mentioned Bridge Corner which is surrounded by income producing industrial units.

I'm assuming this is a misunderstanding or misinterpretation. As FWD says, the Bridge area already includes business/workshop premises. St Modwyn have committed to building an academy/university (so perhaps it might mean residential flats for students?) and at least one hotel (does that count in any way as residential?).

I could even see the possibility for a motorsport 'resort' like golfing on the Algarve. But this concept is almost totally unproven (Ascari doesn't count, we're talking Northamptonshire, not La Mancha) and a huge risk. I can't see how this could be a priority for a decade or so, given the other major projects already necessary.

But if it really is 'ordinary' residential property, that would be corporate suicide for the Silverstone operation. The evidence is there - well actually at Brands Hatch, Castle Combe, and so many others.
At the absolute minimum (even if the circuit were trimmed at Stowe - and what happens to the South and Stowe circuits then?) any homes would have to go on the far side of the Silverstone-Dadford Road (the main entrance). Even then, and even if the property includes this land, I would have thought the better opportunity would be for business properties.

The Telegraph (who I'd expect better from) is following up on notes given out about the possible (note, possible, its not a done deal yet) partnership with St Modwen/Northern Racing.

It states that the initial development would be the circuit develpoment, including "hotel, residential and technology park development" (That's a quote direct from the notes I received)

It doesn't, anywhere, state any corners or details of what will be changed, if anything. But it does ask the question whether the circuit will be reconfigured, to which the answer is 'Probably' But will depend on the value of developing the land, the nature of the development and planning and FIA approval.

Probably all a bit academic really.

I anticipate that motor sport will be banned within 15 years or so and they are talking a 150 year lease. If you believe the latest propganda from the 'global warming/freezing' crown Silverstone will either be under water or several metres of ice by then.

But, given that the current AOL poll (yes, I know, but in the past they seem to have produced broadly representative numbers.) about

"Is enough being done to stop global warming?"

currently has 10% saying YES but 90% saying NO (an hour or so ago it was 9% YSE and 91% NO). It seems to me that sheeple would happily accept a ban on anything to make their lives safer - in about 1000 year's time.

Now the only easy option, other than pricing gas and electricity beyond the means of the population and industry, would be to severly restrict the use of cars and other forms of transport (perhaps). Motor sport would be sacrificed long before that. Mind you the rate at which gas prices are being ramped up I would imagine UK become uninhabitable in its current form long before that. Add to that that there will be little or no work once most major companies have move somewhere else on the planet to reduce overheads.

I suppose another view would be that changes over recent years mean that Silverstone has already been 'lost' ...

Loss of corners? IIRC Silverstone owns a fair bit of the land around the circuit, I believe it is that land that is to be developed.

Been a bit of re-development actually in Silverstone village itself in recent years,
what with the by-pass now open and the timber yard having moved down the road
this bit

mentions the proposal though amongst others.

I know some of the established local villages, have fair share
of Castle Coombe, type residents!!
