F1's new aero and engines - has it worked?

So 'Mad Max' bought in aero cuts and engine restrictions for 2006 to try and reduce costs and speeds.

We know he's failed on the cost front - as it's cost an absolute fortune for teams design and build new V8's - Nice on Max........

But Max's big thing was cutting speeds to improve safety - Good idea Max, so lets just go back to Bahrain 2004 - M Schumacher set a fastest lap of 1m 30.252sec, which is the official fastest lap of that circuit by an F1 car.

Bahrain 2006 - Jenson Button sets a time in final practice of 1m 31.857sec with new aero and a lower powered V8.

So Max has knocked 1.6seconds of the pace, not a great reduction really even in the first race. Will be interesting to see what the qually and race times are.

So far then it a big thumbs up for Max's cost and speed cutting measures.....

But he has to keep doing things so it looks like he's doing something... rather like our beloved Government.

Maybe he has lots of bits of paper with daft ideas on, screwed up in a hat, and each year he picks two at random. My guess for 2007: (1) All cars to be painted orange (2) Drivers not allowed to go to the toilet for 24 hours before the race.
