Motorcycle king Valentino Rossi has thrown down a three-way racing challenge to Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso.

The Yamaha star has called upon Alonso to match his words with actions after the Spaniard dismissed the Italian's recent speed in pre-season F1 testing at Valencia.

Rossi has proposed that the two champions take part in a face-off using bikes, F1 cars and rally cars, after Alonso commented that he could be competitive in Moto GP with enough practise.

"I read that if Alonso is able to make some practise then he can put a MotoGP bike on the podium with me," Rossi told Motor Cycle News.

"Well, I think we should drive a Formula One car, a World Rally car and a MotoGP bike, add the times together and then we will see who is the fastest."

All comes down to who's best in a rally car. Rossi would easily spank Alonso on a bike and despite his speed, I'm sure Alonso would do the same to Rossi in an F1 car.

Didn't Rossi actually compete in a rally recently?

While I am absolutely certain that Rossi would "spank" Alonso emphatically on bikes, I seriously doubt Alonso would do the same in F1 and there is even the chance that egg would be all over the Spaniards face on his home turf. Rally would be interesting, but my money would be firmly on Rossi. I can understand Rossi's indignation; he has stepped up the the mark and shown what he can do. Alonso is just gobbing off, unless he is prepared to prove his assertion.

as it happens the article in autosport reports that Alfonzo is up for the challenge. Now all we need is Loeb for the rallying bit.
I'm thinking 10 miles gravel stage through Kielder, 10 miles worth each of bike and f1 laps.
lowest Total cumulative time = winner

the winner, I'd go for the rallyman, why, coz i think that rossi and loeb can get with in 1.5 sec per lap of the f1 pace, the car guys will get within 5 secs per lap of the bike pace, but fonzo and rossi won't get within 10sec per mile of the rally pace.

and before you talk about rossi wining micky mouse rally monza, he was way off the pace in his rac attempt.

iwould be surprised if alonso could get within ten seconds of rossi. even the back of the moto gp grid is four seconds of rossi! riding a bike at that speed is a world away from anyhting like F1 and i just think that 99% of racing car drivers would bottle it. i dont think alonso would have the commitment nor the mindset trough the corners to get his knee down for as long as rossi, and i think that corners are where the speed would be most important. Rossi can do some good times in a car and he has also competed in a few national level rallies where i think he came second overall?.

i dont think rossi is arrogant, i think a lot of it comes from the reporting and sadly autosport is becoming very tabloid in terms of its articles and writing style. rossi just likes having fun!

I don't think Rossi extented the invitation to Loeb, but I like the idea!

I disagree on the outcome though. I don't think the rally man would actually stay on the bike for 10 miles.

Depends very much how long each event was. The gap between the front and back of the field in a rally can be huge. You'd have to adjust for that when you add up the times. Unless the rally driver also had experience racing bikes, I'd say Rossi would walk it.

i would spank fonso on a bloody bike !

Rossi's talent should not be under estimated i think he could turn his hand to F1 and he is pretty decent in a rally car

I wouldn't say that a rally car would be easy for both? Something that neither has a vast amount of experience in (despite Rossis recent exploits)

Also whilst I'm sure Rossi possesses almost supernatural driving talent, in the much hyped tests at the beginning of '06 where he was quicker than some current F1 drivers, he was in the F2004 V10 compared to everyone else around 200bhp down in the V8s.

If you have not ridden a sportsbike at least enough to pass your test for few year the step to properly being able to push one to the limit is HUGE.

And a rally car is just a souped'd 4x4 road rocket (slightly togue in cheek) but a milliaon mile away from 250bhp through the contact patch the size of you hand!

Rossi will win.

Riding a bike at speed is not something you can be good at with "some practice". There is more skill overlap going from bikes to cars, than from cars to bikes.

When Alonso has the equivalent car to Rossi's Yamaha (after leaving Honda), and does something with it, similar to what Rossi has done at Yamaha, and then when Alonso has equalled or bettered Rossi's equivalent achievements in Moto GP, then perhaps he can 'dismiss' Rossi, until then Rossi's record speaks for itself. Besides Kimi was the quicker/better driver last year, not by much, but enough that it should have mattered; he just didn't have the equipment to confirm the reality. Rossi does not have anyone comparable in the same sense.

Well chaps. I have no idea who would win.

But it would make superb TV.

I wonder if that's the point. A bit of hype now...then...[tv voiceover on]a Europe wide TV extravaganza featuring heroes old and new from all the motorsport disciplines! Something for everyone! An unmissable event! Tune in on.[tv voiceover off].

I am a cynical bastard.

Whered do people get the idea tha Kimi is the better driver Alonso got such a head start last year the my mid way he was cruising and just doing enough and then look at when it was won - off to Suzuka and annialated every one. Get them all in the same cars. Bin the manufactures. And get Rossi in F1 asap- how he just wins this year MotoGP but get really pushed and then think sod it lets do F1.

has alonso ever raced a bike (never mind won) at any level? if not he's talking out of his hole

'some practice' yeah, a couple of years with Keith Code might help him be competetive in a club race, but match up to rossi? not a chance
