The EU commission is according to itv/f1 threatening action against Hungary, Spain and Italy for allowing ciggie advertising.
Well I have been wondering about this for a while now, I thought tobacco ads Europe wide were banned last July as well as other parts of the world too such as the USA and even parts of Asia. In line with this some teams such as Williams and McLaren have parted with the cigarette brands that used to sponsor them but most of the teams havent, namely Ferrari, Honda and Renault. Now obviously Ferrari can do what they want but I seem to remember reading anouncments from both Honda and Renault that they would not be advertising these brands any more but they still are as bold as brass as too are the Penske team in the IRL in the USA.
Sooo my question is what is the situation in each territory regarding such ads and how are they all getting away with it?
On a seperate note and a question for any French based PHers, are F1 races being broadcast there? I read a story in a paper a few months ago of some french newspapers being sued by the EU or French government (for a considerable amount of money) for printing pictures of an F1 driver and forgetting to censor tobacco ads on their overalls in the pics . How do they get around this in showing races on tv? Or are they only shown on cable or something therefore getting round the rules?
At this point I might just add I myself am not against tobacco ads in any way and am against the smoking bans currently being introduced, it makes me sad to see the so called nanny state imposing its self in to every part of are lives. I hero worshipped Senna and Prost as a lad in ther red and white Marlboro McLarens yet dont smoke myself I dont mind it I just dont because errr its kind of bad for you any fool should know that, if they dont tough.

GP.com has a slightly clearer explanation at:
www.grandprix.com/ns/ns16644.html
As I read it, national governments have to implement EU Directives as local legislation. It would appear that some haven't applied it as expected (e.g. Spain has a 3 year exemption for motorsport).
Those teams that still have tobacco money are exploiting the law to the limit in each country, running lgos where they can. There is more to this than meets the eye. A UK team can be prosecuted for gaining from cigarette branding, even if the exposure is in another country. So I would suspect that Honda is actually registered in another country.
Having said that, I would expect to see branding disappear (much of the time) when the European season begins.
