Some questions about Touring cars...

i've been trying to follow the BTCC for a short while, an 3 things spring to mind...
1. regarding the 'works teams' in the BTCC & WTCC, are they owned by the vehicle companies they represent, or are they just contracted to work on their behalf for a big fee, as in like WRC?
2. it does seem that many of the teams that do tour car racing in the UK keep coming an going from year, an so i wonder whether they just really change their name each season or two, or go do another race event somewhere, or closedown, or what???
3. Ive been trying to assertain who are the top 2 UK touring-teams - for i reckon topdog must be 'Triple 8' followed by WSR, tho feel free to dispute this i'm only confident of the first since they even do their wind-tunnel modeling - jesus!

I agree the Championship has not been the same since the mid 90's, at least up until last year you could go and watch the 'proper touring cars' in the club championship Formula Saloons but I think it merged with another championship this year

I think you'll find in the btcc as with most other series the 'works teams' are as you say proffesional race teams contracted to develope and run the cars..

thats what i loved so much about the old touring cars, it was a contact sport with some great racing and great crashes. If you ain't rubbin' you ain't racin'!!

Formula Saloons died in 2004, Garry ran a one-off race for Super Tourers at Snetterton last year, but a "re-match" didn't come off.
There are Super Tourers running in the following championships:
Scottish Sports & Saloons
Northern Sports & Saloons
but by far the biggest contingent are in the LMA Eurosaloons, I think 8 at the last count. You can see them mixing it with Road Saloons, Modified Saloons, and the odd sportscar thrown in for good measure.
The old Thundersaloons are spread all over the place, most of them seem to be holed up in people's garages. You'll see that sort of machinery in some of the regional "Sports & Saloons" championships, and the Dunlop Track & Race Cars series (BARC-SE based).
Some of them (the V8 powered variety) could find a proper home in the all new Dunlop V8 Supercar Challenge run by the EERC (of Britcar fame). Although the first race was sparse in terms of cars (quite a few were pulled from the final entry due to mechanical woes - including mine) - the racing was good, showing that big banger tin-tops can mix it with nimble sportscars like TVR Sagaris' Next round August 5th at Donington - BE THERE!

I blame the Alfa's and their bloody wings etc...leave it to the Italians to spoil yet another fantastic race series

888 are in banbury just up the road from prodrive.
the only works teams are 888 who run the vauxhall team and northern south who run seat uk from northampton
all the other teams including team dynamics and wsr are private teams in which the drivers pay for the privelage.

Ya know what, i wuz sure that 888 were in Surrey. Didn't they start off down there in Edebridge's old facility, or am I talking tosh (as usual).
It just sticks in my mind about them starting there, and since I've been to sleep, they sneaked up to Banbury....
Of course, not forgetting West Surrey Racing who made their name in F3 (among other single seater formulae) before venturing into tin-tops. Along with Prodrive, they once ran the Ford BTCC works team (Mondeo Super Touring - when touring cars were faster [in a straight line])
Other top outfits, not necessarily in the BTCC, but in the WTCC, include RML (Ray Mallock Ltd) in Wellingborough, Northants. They run the works Chevy team. It'd be nice to see one of those, or three, in the BTCC, but I doubt General Motors would let that happen.
