And surprise surprise, he's Japanese:

False nationalism? Cynical marketing ploy? Or even borderline racism?

Somehow I can't see British F1 fans getting behind a similarly manufactured 'all-British' F1 team. I seem to remember the Prost team was conceived under similar ideals, and remember how well they did...

Is this a case of marketing appeal winning out over competitive edge?

I guess he will either be bringing a stack of sponsorship and/or paying for his drive. But money is the overriding factor.

some F1 website said:
The Super Aguri team joined the 2006 F1 championship in the first race of the season in Bahrain.

With Japanese drivers, Honda engines, Bridgestone tyres and Japanese sponsors, it is the first all-Japanese team in a still largely Western sport.

Suzuki became the first Asian to stand on the F1 podium in 1990 when he finished third at the Japanese Grand Prix.

He has vowed to put racers on his new team on the podium before his planned retirement at age 50 in 2010.

With a statement like that and the fact he's not signing 'experienced' F1 drivers with development experience they're going to struggle!!!

As previously said they'd better going to A1GP if all they want is a Japanese national team.

Nice sentiments but very very missplaced!!!

Wasnt that the original idea behind Jaguar entering F1? British Racing Green, famous marque etc etc And as we know, that went well.......

So far in 1st practice...................

Davidson quickest on a 1m23.2s

Yamamoto - 1m31.5s after 8 laps
Sato - 1m37.2 after 6 laps.

Well he's quicker than than Sato so far, Montagny not done a timed lap yet.

Mind you, there was talk not so long ago about how great it would be to get Button in a Williams-Cosworth.

The trouble with Jaguar is that they were, well, they were crap, theres no two ways about it. If they DID have a good UK driver (ie - not irvine) and they were in a position to win races on a regular basis or challenge for the title there would have been a very great deal more national fervour. As it was though it was a bit of a farce despite some impressive backing. nations dont like backing losers - well, unless its tim 'we're backing you all the way to the semis' henman i suppose...

What is going on with this Davidson character, He was quickest in friday running at Monaco as well until he buried it in a conveniently placed tyre wall. Quickest today. Surely he should be in a full time drive?

Like all 3rd drivers they don't limit the engine as it doesn't need to be preserved and protected for 2 race weekends. So they run without limits. That's why you often see him, Kubica (BMW), Wurz (Williams) at the top.

Ahhh, that would explain it then!
