Ari Vatanen question.

OK guys, here`s a question for all you older rally fans.
Can anyone tell me with complete certainty who was co-driving for Ari Vatanen on the 1982 Manx and Circiut of Ireland rallies when he was driving the Shell Oils "Black Beauty" Escort.

Pretty sure that would be Dave Richards

Terry Harryman was his 1982 co-driver on the World Rally events in both the 1000 Lakes and Swedish rallys driving an Escort, and in an Ascona 400 for the Lombard RAC.

The year before (81) it was Dave Richards and from 82-85 it was Terry without a break.

Might have been the same pairing on the Manx & Ireland events?

I`m sure it wasn`t Dave Richards and I think Terry Harryman was co-driving for Toivenen on the 82 Rothmans Open Campionship. Was it somebody called Wilson.
I need someone to look in the 82 Autocourse book.

Thanks guys, I had a feeling it was Neil Wilson.

Yes, 7 hour stage timing totals, those were the days. I last did the Circuit in 1992 when it was 5 days long and the total stage time was even longer, it was the last time the event ran in that format. I drove a GpN BMW M3 and I won Gp N and finished 7th overall which really upset the Ford team.

I don't think I've ever seen a car quite so prepared to roll over.

Some of them didn't even need to hit anything to manage it.

But the number of very minor hits into earth banks that put them over is really quite remarkable.



Oh aye. Vatanen's save at 1:41 in that clip was just awesome. And he kept his foot in.

Co-driver didn't turn into the gibbering wreck you might expect, either.

Yeah, I love the fact that even though he has quite clearly just pinched off a fresh loaf in his nomex ("deeeearrr... god" ), he just gets straight back on with giving his pace notes. Totally dead pan.

Vatanen is a god, and a really nice bloke too.

Meeting him (and him calling me insane for my driving skills -or lack thereof-) was one of the highlights of my life

The "DearGod" clip is from the Manx rally, they are in a Manta 400 in Rothmans livery, the wall touch blew the tyre which is why the car understeers so badly afterwards, the manta 400 is still my all time fave rally car and that rally was when the Opels did a 1-2-3 against the Audi Quattro's which were slated to win.

i wonder what the co-drivers heart rate was then?

as much as i respect circuit drivers, i am in awe of both rally drivers and their co-drivers.

Agree totally, the circuit boys get the vast majority of the hero worship, yet the rally boys drive roads on the Tour De Corse and Monte Carlo rallies that a race driver would refuse point blank to compete on.

Derek Warwick, Martin Brundle and Derek Bell have all had a shot at rallying and been humbled by their experiences..........

Motorsport driving at its very finest. If an example of classic motorsport masterpiece could be named, that film would be my pick.

The film maker captured it perfectly: a beautiful piano introduction to the art of ridiculously fast, ballsy driving, followed by no other soundtrack than the grunts of the muscular Peugeot 405 T16, and the awesome visuals of Ari dancing his machine up the dreadful slopes of Pike's Peak.
