The Finn, out of contract at McLaren, has reportedly been offered four times the annual salary of current Renault driver and World Champion Fernando Alonso to drive for the French squad in 2007 and beyond.
That's a very expensive contract for someone who is or has not been, a world champion. If true, then I'm a little disappointed that Kovalainen isn't getting a seat. That guy is one of the most talented up-and-coming drivers available, comparable to Rosberg and Hamilton, yet he's not getting a seat?

If it's true then Flavio's hardly the wheeler-dealer everyone says he is. He could probably have saved half of that if he'd offered to up Fernando's salary when it became a dead cert he'd be champ last year...

Renault may view it as cheap at the price over the long term if it keeps him out of the reach of Ferrari.

Fine but why 4 years
I would imagine it would be for 2 years initially and then the other two as an option. I'm stunned at the money though. Presumably it is a bit of high for Raik and low for Alonso. I wonder how he'll do, though. A number of drivers have struggled to repeat their performance once they've left McLaren.
Kimi will be World Champion next year at Renault... he would have been for the last two years as well if he'd been given a reliable car.
Heikki did well to win the Race of Champions, but that's a one off event. Racing in F1 will be very different, but I'm sure that he'll do very well when he joins McLaren as Alonso's team mate next year...

I'll stick my neck and and say that that's nonsense.
The "Kovalainen to McLaren" idea? My neck's with yours.
Fat Flav was furious (as well as foolish-looking) when Alonso went to McLaren. NO WAY that he would let that happen again, and he has a lot more control over Kovalainen than he did over Alonso.
So it looks like Flav and Ron are swapping their lead drivers.
Flav got the ever-so-slightly less brilliant of the two, for whom he'll be paying 50% more.
Seems fair to me.
By the way, Flav, do you mind if I borrow a little "Billionaire" perfume - I need to disinfect the toilets.
So where will Kovalainen go next year? Will he need to tolerate another year in the #3 seat at Renault, while his contemporary rivals have racing seats (Rosberg in Williams, Liuzzi and Speed in STR, Klien in RBR, Montagny in Super Aguri, Monteiro in Midland)?
This is a guy who beat not only the Schu Meister, but also Sebastian Loeb at the Race of Champions 2004. Perhaps he was twice lucky, but his CV seems to say his skill made the luck for him. A team needs to snatch this dude fast.
Another driver I'm interested seeing in a race seat is Karthikeyan, currently testing for Williams.

interestingly, a lot of those drivers that have won these type of events have gone on to become world champions.
if you go back to the tv supersprints of the early 80's, winners included, mansell, kankkunen, d hill etc. if you can drive you can drive etc.

I think you'll find Karthikeyan was a bit pants when he drove for Jordan last year.

He didn't have much of a chance.
Despite doing 49 laps to Nico Rosberg's 62 he was quicker than him. Look at these pre-season test times:
1-Montagny (Renault; 1m19.468s); 2-Gene (Ferrari; 1m19.687s); 3-Kovalainen (Renault; 1m19.809s); 4-Davidson (Honda; 1m20.144s); 5-Karthikeyan (Williams; 1m20.291s); 6-De la Rosa (McLaren; 1m20.369s); 7-R Schumacher (Toyota; 1m20.454s); 8-Klien (Red Bull; 1m20.581s); 9-Rosberg (Williams; 1m20.644s); 10-Badoer (Ferrari; 1m20.845s); 11-Rossiter (Honda; 1m20.978s); 12-Briscoe (Toyota; 1m21.211s); 13-Paffett (McLaren; 1m21.252s); 14-Biagi (MF1; 1m21.878s); 15-Albers (MF1; 1m23.203s).
