Newey reveals all
Discussion
OK, so he didn't give away any trade secrets at his talk at the Design Museum last night...but he did let slip that BMW's controversial flow conditioners are to be banned from the next race. I tried to draw him on whether the RB3 wil be zero or twin keel, but he wouldn't tell.
He also stated that contrary to popular opinion, the FW14B was not a car that your granny could have won the 1992 title with. The car moved around a lot and furthermore, Patrese couldn't make that leap of faith to keep his foot planted - Mansell could.
He admitted some mistakes in the 1994 car which contribued to its poor performance earlier in the year - these were carry-overs from the active ride era...
He also ventured an opinion as to why the Honda is not as quick as it should be: he drew attention to the fact that the bottom half of the grid had largely eschewed barge boards whereas Renault, Ferari and McLaren all use them.
The F1 exhibition, whilst not large has some iconic cars on display - visitors can get up close and personal with them and the exploded/cut away R25 is ecellent value. There's also a selection of Renault F1 parts to pick up and marvel at and also the chance to try Fisichella's seat for size (and jeez does he have slim hips)!
Partick Head speaks on September 4th and that promises for some fireworks. At a tenner a head including wine and effectively a private view of the exhibition, this has to be good value (standard admission is £7 on its own).

I recall a discussion between Nigel Roebuck and Patrick Head on why Mansell was so much quicker than Patrese with the FW14B, when they had been equal the previous year. Patrick referred to telemetry traces that showed Mansell would throw the car into the corner, to catch it with momentary, full opposite lock (onto the stop). The trace in question was from Hockenheim. On the long curve. At over 190mph...
