I'm just starting out in Tractor pulling and was wondering if there is anyone here that is involved?

Go on then, what you using? How many BM-Volvo loading shovel turbo's have you grafted to a Fordson Major?

I'm not involved, but having an agricultural background, I am interested in this sport of mad power crazed people from the 'sticks.

I used to marvel at the Tractor Pulling on Eurosport. I recall one guy had somehow attached 12 Allison V12 Diesel engines to a chassis.(for some reason I think they were ex-submarine engines). Much of the coverage appeared to be from the Netherlands, which kind of says it all.

tractor pullers really are ing nuts. its a bizarre sport but quite addictive. the amount of power and the effort they put into sled preparation is really gobsmacking. like you say, it seems the netherlands and also scandinavia are tractor heads, so to speak, but i spose ive always had a soft spot for 'red alert'

The turbo induction noise is mad. Must be quite a spectacle.

Its slightly less heath robinson than that, and a little more mental. Its a custom built chassis, with a R/R Meteor 27ltr V12, DAF 2800 rear axle and gearbox, it should produce around 800-850bhp

Pics to follow. At present the chassis is bare, the rear axle and gearbox are away being overhauled and and the motor is awaiting installation.I "plan" to document the build process, so will keep you all updated as an when. I rekon this will be a blast , whether it will actually be competitive or not will have to be seen. The only bummer is that I have had to sell my Turbo Esprit to fund it

Used to like watching "Magkal bits n pieces" on Eurosport a few years back. Do Eurosport still cover it ? Oh yeah, used to own a JD 4020 and 4230 amongst others.

I used to live practically next door to a tractor puller, The Hardwick Beast I think it was called (going back a few years now). Used to love watching it at Tingewick near Buckingham.

Used to love seeing one with 4 V8 popping and flaming. He used 4 for one class and then bolted a fifth one on for another class. Nutters!!

I've been to tractors pulls every year since I was about 8 at Great Eccleston in Lancashire. It really is the most powerful motorsport by a long way, its absolutely mad some of the tractors they have now. I also know (well friends with a friend) of Desperate Dan if you know that tractor.

That has 6 supercharged Chevy v8's each with about 2000bhp, then there is a couple with 3 allison V12's on, think that was Stralight Express. Another one I have seen is again an allison v12 powered one where the blowers had been removed and the biggest turbo's I have ever seen put on!

I just love the spectacle, especially the night pulls when all you can see is flames out of every exhaust stack with noise so loud that it is deafening when next to you and shakes the very ground you stand on. It really is amazing to watch.

My personal favourites are the highly modified ones that still look like tractors (dunno know the class names) but the turbo'd ones. I love looking under the bonnet as they have twin or three stage turbo charging where the air goes consecutively into each turbo and they go to something like 100psi or something sily. They are great to watch as they take forever to get spooled as the turbines are so big, thats why they are such a challenge to get off the line as they have kind of slipper clutches that diengages more the more power you feed in. Having spoken to a few drivers they are a very definite art to get away from the line. There was a dutch one last year that I think claimed to be the most powerful diesel tractor ever, it was about 6000bhp and revved to 8000rpm

But the most impressibe tractor I have ever seen is banned in the uk I think, as gas turbines are not allowed. It was called the Terminator I think and had 4 Isotov (sp) helicopter gas turbines on it. It needed its own portable compressor unit to start each engine and the noise was phenomenal sort of high pitched whistle with a massive undertone of bass. It then accelerated down the track like it was a drag car not pulling god knows how many tons of weight. It absolutely flew and the poor guy with the red flag at the and must have been shitting himself seeing that coming towards him. I have it on video and all you can see is this huge dust cloud it created and it then emerging out of the dust with 6 foot flames out of each exhaust outlet - absolutely phenominal - people who have never seen it and call themselves petrol head are missing out!

Anyway I got a bit carried away with that, I just love tractor pulling and watching it.
