In geek mode this morning and have been reading up about the Le Mans Endurance Series LMES. I didn’t know that the European Le Mans Series ELMS only ran in 2001 and that the LMES was first ran in 2004. So question is, in what series did prototypes run in 2002/2003 in Europe?

As an aside, after the world sports prototype series died in 1992 was there any prototype series racing in Europe (apart from the Le Mans 24 Hours) until the LMES started?

OK, answered the question myself (or at least wikipedia did):

1953 – 1992: World Sports Car Championship
1997 – 1998: International Sportscar Racing Series
1999: SportsRacing World Cup
2000 – 2003: FIA Sportscar Championship
2001: ELMS
2004 – 2006: LMES

Don't forget the American Le Mans Series. It started in 1999.

Also, I think the LMES is now simply the Le Mans Series.

When did Stephane Ratel get going? I recall the (BPR) Kaarcher sponsored series but can't remember whether it extended to pure prototypes at all.

BPR Series morphed into what is now the FIA GT Championship, which is why you won't recall it being involved with prototypes.
