Following on from his dominant title success in the 2006 British F3 Championship, Mike Conway added yet another feather to his cap with an almost lights-to-flag triumph in this weekend's prestigious Macau Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old may have qualified only seventh for the blue riband event, but he was in the right place when it counted midway around the first lap, as the leading trio of pole-sitter Kamui Kobayashi, Marko Asmer and F3 Euroseries champion Paul di Resta all got tangled up together and skated straight on as they tussled over the top spot under braking for the tight Lisboa right-hander, promoting the Sevenoaks ace into a lead he would retain all the way to the flag.

In doing so, Conway became the first Briton since Darren Manning back in 1999 to lift the laurels around the narrow streets of Guia, though it could all have turned out very differently had fate been less kind to him.

"I'm very happy with this result," the Raikkonen Robertson Racing star said, "but there was a heart-stopping moment when I touched the wall."

Fortunately for the Brit, any damage was only superficial and he was able to continue to pull away to a famous victory in the Far Eastern classic, leading home Euroseries race-winner Richard Antinucci and Japanese champion Adrian Sutil.

Indeed, Conway had set out his stall from the minute the weekend got started, immediately on the pace on his maiden trip to Macau. Although he slipped outside the top ten for the first time in qualifying, he produced a gutsy performance in the pre-final to work his way up to seventh place at the finish and ensure that on Sunday he would be ready to pounce.

"Winning such a big race is a great feeling," he admitted. "Of course, I smiled when I saw the others driving straight on in front of me. After the safety-car, I tried to pull clear as soon as I could and from then on, I had a trouble-free race."
