Mercedes W154/W163 1939 - Head and shoulders above the rest. Is a GP car, not F1, but is the finest looking racing car ever made IMHO.

The streamlined Auto Union isn't an F1 car - it's pre-war. the F1 category came into being in 1948.
It is a Grand Prix car - although they took part in only a couple of races at the Avusring.

I like the 1975 312T as well (as driven by Nikki Lauda).

all those old f1 cars look the same to me

To be fair, there is quite a spread of years covered by those pictures.

Mercedes 154 (2.5 litre front engined)- 1954
Honda RA272 (1.5 litre rear engined)- 1965
Lotus 49 (3 litre rear engined) - 1967
Although the picture depicts the car early in 1968.
In fact, that looks like Jim Clark driving. Clark never drove a Gold Leaf Team Lotus 49 in a Formula 1 GP as he was killed in April 1968, before the start of the European rounds of the 1968 F1 season. He won the first GP of 1968, the South African GP in Kyalami. The car was in British Racing Green colours, not Gold Leaf. Could that picture be from a Tasman Series race, I wonder?

was 1939 and a 3 litre s/c and in 163 guise is simply the lovliest thing ever. Even the mighty C9/88 withers in comparison.

Saw this car today when I got bored with the M1 and stopped off at Donington for a meeting list and squint in the Museum.
