[/homermodeoff] Have to say this just shows the way WRC is going.
It is a marketing tool for some manufacturers in a similar way to F1 and little more.
Hence the big stadium Mickey Mouse "stages", that have so very little consequence on the overall result but get big TV coverage for the sponsors.
Now I know that the expense of running a WRC team is VERY expensve but the whole show is losing its appeal to me. I come from the time when the "RAC" was a 5 day event with night time stages (Keilder at 4.30am in November, Dalby at daybreak, sleeping in the car whilst we followed the event round the country etc) and I find the current crop of events (or at least some of them, what happened to the Acropolis, the Safari, etc).and entrants uninteresting. At least if current TV coverage is anything to go by (Eurosport).
There are what, 4 main manufacturers, three top level drivers: Mr Magic (Loeb) Mr Grumpy (Gronholm) and Mr drive it too hard (Solberg P). Hervonen is a good up and coming driver but the rest still don't compare with my recollections of Macrae, Burns, Mackinen, Sainz, Kannkunen, Clark, Mikkola, Blomquist, Vatennen, Walter Rohll, even Arikkala, Brookes, Macrae J, Llewellen, Pond etc. I am afraid Atkinson, Pons, Solberg H, Sordo, etc just don't do it for me. I may be becoming too patriotic here but without one british driver getting into a top team with the exception of Malcolm Wilsons son, there is little personal interest at the moment. I do however acknowledge the great contribution to the sport by a few british co drivers at this point who always seem cool and calm in the face of trouble. (And before I am shot down here, I really appreciate the driving of Loeb, Gronholm, Hervannen, and my favorite drivers of all time are Makkinen, Vattenen and Kannkunen, but anyonewho drives down a main street straight into a flower bed....
