Le Mans week: The Legendary 956/962

Porsche’s awesome racers celebrate their 25th anniversary at Silverstone this summer

As it’s the run up to Le Mans this week, we thought we’d highlight the fact that one of the race’s most famous cars is celebrating a 25th anniversary this year.

The Group C Porsche 956 won the race outright from its debut in 1982 through to 1985, with the 962C scoring two more victories in 1986 and 1987. After that there was the epic struggle with Jaguar in 1988 that the British firm narrowly won over the works Porsche team, and a brave fight from the lead Joest entered 962C in 1989 that eventually faltered against a three car assault from Sauber Mercedes.

Even then, it wasn’t all over, as the Dauer 962 ‘road car’ triumphed in 1994 under GT class rules, and the engine would continue winning in 1996 and 1997 with the Joest TWR-Porsche.

Joest won Le Mans in 1984...

As well as massive success outright, the 956/962 will always be remembered as a hardy race car that provided the back bone of the sport for a decade, with countless private teams entering them in a huge variety of colour schemes.

Even though it achieved success all over the world, it was at Le Mans that it seemed most at home; a magnificent blend of reliability, near-250mph top speed, finely-honed ground effect aerodynamics and 600 - 800+ bhp keeping the car competitive even in its old age.

This summer, up to 10 of these Porsches will be amongst 35 cars competing from the charismatic era of 1980s endurance racing at the Silverstone Classic, in association with Bonhams, taking place on 27th, 28th, 29th July.

Group C metal from the World Sports-Prototype Championship will take on their brethren from the US-based IMSA GTP series in the ACO Plate Award, on Saturday, and the Silverstone Classic Trophy, on Sunday.

...and then did it again in '85 with the very same car
...and then did it again in '85 with the very same car
The races, part of Group C/GTP Racing's schedule of events for 2007, will be accompanied by a celebration of the big, bad Porker’s birthday. The very first 956, which Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell drove to Group C victory on its debut in the 1982 Silverstone Six Hours, will be on display, together with other examples of the famous German machine. Among  the  Porsche  962  drivers  will  be  Derek  Bell  himself  - the  65-year-old sportscar  legend  will  share  a  1989  car  with Mark  Sumpter  in  Sunday's  two-driver,  45-minute  Silverstone Classic Trophy.

This actual 962C has a tremendous history: it scored the last World Sports-Prototype win for the 962, at Dijon in 1989, in the hands of Bob Wollek and Frank Jelinski. It also won that year's German Supercup with Wollek, and then raced on into the early 1990s in the Daytona 24 Hours and other IMSA GTP events. Although it first sported Blaupunkt livery, the car is now finished in the FAT Turbo colours with which it finished its racing life in period.

Looks like anyone interested in Group C racing needs to get themselves along to Silverstone this July.

If you have ever seen one up close and personal. A 962 is amazing. I saw one at Brumos Porsche with Hurley Haywood, Talking about this car and this amazing collection of Porsches. This car was actully destroyed by the President of Porsche North America. He hit Paul Nemwan and wrote of another Brumos Porsche at same event. Some pieses are still on the wall at Brumos Porsche. Both cars were put back better than the Factory. So I had A three time (Hurley Haywood) Leman's winner as a tour guide. Wow what a good time.

I remember watching LM 1988 on video as a kid. The battle between the Jags and 962's was awesome, and I never could decide who I was supporting more. Will never forget the sight of a 962 drifting sideways in the wet in shell colours.

Yep - I was there, got some great shots of that car in the pits in the days before security was tighter than Posh's jumpers.

For me, the 956/962 is the definitive and most evocative Le Mans car ever, bar none. I openly admit that is down to the fact that it spanned an era when I had enough spare time to watch every UK race and some of the Le Mans races that the cars featured in and to also meet the drivers and teams that ran these cars...again in an era when they were more approachable and the atmosphere was more "clubby" than corporate.

I was at Silverstone the first time the 956 ever raced and saw them all through their heyday in every UK race you care to recall and a couple of Le Mans races too and if I am 100% honest they never worked for me. Fantastic and simply the most effective car of their type, but really never set my heart ticking like the Lancia's of the time, or the Sauber Mercs and Jags later on. Just typical Porsche in that they went about their business in a clockwork manner.

935K3's, 917's and 910's on the other hand....

935s do it for me, factory or Kremer but only Martini, Jaegermeister or Vaillant colours. 917s too, but they're just plain frightening up close - my bicycle frame is stronger...

956/962 was such a fixture that it just doesn't inspire in the same way.

I have two 962s the white kremer kenwood car and the advan car that competed in the Japanese series in the 80s.

I need some in period photos of the kenwood car with short tail especially and also any information on team wear so that I can get some remade.

Would anyone on the forum have any information that may help.

Many Thanks

If you could quote the chassis numbers I might find some pics. It's a bit nerd but I know far more than is healthy about 956s and 962s...

The Kremer car is chassis no 110. The Advan one is C-147. Now go nerd, Steve.

The Kremer guys didn't have any special team wear... just red overalls.

Did the Kenwood car compete at Le Mans and in which year/s? I have several years' worth of photographs from 1986 to 1988....

This summer's Silverstone Classic will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the legendary Porsche 956. One of the most successful sportscars of all time, this car was first launched and raced at the Silverstone six hour race of 1982.

The picture of the Kenwood car is quite sad and evocative.

It was taken before Jo Gartner was killed in an accident on the Mulsanne driving it in the race. I believe he was the last person to be killed in the race at Le Mans. His accident was one of the catalysts to the ACO's decision to put chicanes on the Mulsanne.

Sorry boys havn't been around for a while.

Been putting together a team for 2 LMP1 cars going to Sebring and hopefully LeMans!!

The chassis numbers for the cars are:

Kenwood red and white 962 cks6 88.
Advan 962 111.

Would love to get any memorabilia for both cars or any of the races the cars were in.

Both cars will be doing the one hour race before the 24hr and the kenwood is doing the parade in lemans town on the friday night.I will also have to do the drivers parade!

Being a LeMans virgin cant wait to get there.
If any of you boys are going would be good to meet for a beer.
