It is very understandable, UK sport has nothing to shout about at the moment when along comes a rookie smashing records, media hysteria is guaranteed and we should remember that podiums in your 7 first races is unheard of.

It is easy to get annoyed with the media attention but when you consider his feat it's not suprising and shouldnt detract from his achievements.

It's a very good article. I'd forgotten that Villeneuve set pole in his very first race in '96, yet he was in a similar position to LH.

Alonso could not keep up whilst running in the disturbed air and had no chance of slipstreaming on the start finish straight.

Odd comment. Did we watch the same race? I distinctly remember Alonso using the slipstream and getting alongside Hamilton into T1. Neither driver made a mistake and Hamilton held the corner.

I wonder how many drivers in their first season made no mistakes in the races. Villeneuve went off and damaged his car in his first race. Schumacher grenaded the Jordan gear box by clutching for La Source and smashed up cars.

Whilst i dont subscribe to the hysteria surrounding the boy (i was in the race that preceded his first car race / Formula Renault race, where the drivers held up our start by wrecking, lots. He finished 15th that day, and i wondered why mclaren had signed him in karts), he is getting the job done, and without error.
