My partner's son is preparing an old mini for Hill Climbing. At the moment the body is stripped down ready for some welding work. Any tips would be appreciated on preparing a Hill Climb Mini and modifications.

Hi, presume a roll cage will be first thing to be added, espcially if already stripped down?

With respect to mods, how long is a piece of string! Sorry if that seems flippant but not sure what his budget is and how standard he wants to keep the mini - will he keep it roadgoing or make it into a stripped out racer? What is the current spec of the car?

Our biggest performance gain (car in profile) came from putting slicks on this year, you can get super sticky Dunlop wets (without the treads cut) that would be good for hillclimbing (warm very quickly) though we use Miglia slicks for sprinting.

An LSD is also massively helpful with traction which will be critical when hillclimbing.

Best place on PH for more info is the classic mini forum, loads of racers on there.

Best of luck,

Chris

Get hold of a copy of the Blue Book for the regs. Body mods are quite limited now for Mod Prod classes, so check before you do anything.

I'm hoping to hillclimb my Mini this year, but they won't let it into Mod Prods as it's been de-seamed so I'll be in the Libre class with some very serious bits of kit.

Always read the rules of the championship you are entering - getting moved up a class tends to mean you are totally uncompetitive

One piece fibreglass front ends = nono in modprod and welcome to sports libre!

What is "de-seamed?" I tried google and just found lots of minis for sale that claimed this had been done to them.

I think this change has hit a lot of Minis this year pushing them out of the class they have been competing in for years.

De-seaming is where you chop the seams or gutters off the body and weld them up then smooth them over. Here's a picture of mine, if you look closely you can see the gutters have gone around the roof and the seams on the A and C pillars.

From my own experience the one thing that made most difference was buying the right tyres, in the case of the championships I enter these are super soft ACB10s, it is the one area I would never scrimp on.

As others have said, read the blue book and the championship regs.

Does anyone know if the MSA 'Go Racing' Starter Pack contains the relevant regs for hillclimbing?

I think this is the only other way of getting a Blue Book without applying for a license.

Is the cost of it redeemable against a licence? The Non-Race National B Speed licence is only £34 - that's the licence you need for hillclimbs.

I doubt it as the pack is £51. It's a quick way (I hope) of getting the regs without having to apply for a licence, which involves getting a medical.

I got my Non-Race National B Speed licence without a medical. Check the application form closely.

You only need a non-race B licence and that doesn't require a medical.

Alternatively, you could just buy the Blue Book direct from the MSA for £23. A little pointless when the licence including hte book costs just over £30.

Can i ask what may seem a stupid question?

By deseaming the mini havent you weakend the structure of the car? I know it can be done at no detrement to the origonal structure if done very well but for motorsport wouldnt you want it to far superior to that of a std shell and keep seems in place and strengthen these further?

deseaming of Minis is a traditional cosmetic change, although was banned from Mini racing due to the superior aerodynamics. The MSA does indeed take the view that it weakens the stucture and thus does not allow it.

are you sure about that?.... my mates hillclimb mini has been competing in various peoples hands for the best part of 40 years, many of those years its been de-seamed. its not mentioned anywhere in the blue book, and its never been picked up by any of the scrutineers of the meetings i've been to with him.

anyone? I remember being at a beuli show a few years (2003) ago and saw a dark green/ gold greeny mini deseamed with the nicest set of alloys i've ever seen on a mini. Always thought it would be a nice hobby to have something like that and take it hill climbing biggrin

Blue Book talks about not making alterations to the monococque and this year seems to have seen a bit of a sea change in scrutineers' approach to modprod cars in general and Minis in particular.

I think the feeling is that they've been overly reliant on competitors protesting one another's modifications rather than checking very carefully themselves.

At leat one chap with a five-link rear axle on his Escort has been told to change it as the boxes for the upper links constitute an alteration that is not permitted.
