Reading the recent thread about Heidfeld in a simulator, I remembered watching this during the Brit GP last weekend...

What software do you think they're running? My initial thought was something based on rFactor but it could be a custom one-off?

Looks a lot of fun either way though!

I guess they could borrow/buy the graphics engine from a reputable sim manufacturer to save them having to map/program all the circuit rendering themselves, but the primary purpose of the simulator is not really simply to simulate the track for a driver to learn etc, its to actually test parts (or simulated versions of the parts), so I very much doubt the underlying physics engine is based on anything you can buy for a Playstation smile

Yeah, I seriously doubt that rFactor has plugins to allow you to use a hydraulic bed to simulate bumps and g-forces.

Yes it has, have you never seen the Force Dynamics simulators working?

(Granted thats the RBR (older game) one being run but I couldn't be arsed to search all night to show it working with rFactor, GTR2)

It's all data exported realtime to the system that runs the hydraulics, it can probably work with any game.

They say - " Force Dynamics keeps close tabs on the "mod" community for racing simulations, which is constantly producing new cars and tracks for existing software. For instance, several hundred user-created tracks are available for just one of our supported simulations, NASCAR 2003, and more are coming out all the time for one of the newer games, rFactor." in the FAQ section.

The simulators they use for the hospitality gigs is rFactor, but those just have a force-feedback wheel, so not as intricate.

The Blundell in the car bit was held over until the German GP coverage.

How do they simulate the G forces?

The did show Brundle in the Williams on Saturday, he was awesome around Silverstone, would have been interesteding to know roughly what sort of time he did, plus we can then compare it to when Blundell does his, see how the stack up.

Smack him in the side of the head biggrin

No seriously though, they don't simulate the G-forces. What they simulate are the bumps and jumps that occur within the chassis of the car, and also the sheer force required to move the wheel and the feedback it gives.

They were going to show the piece on Sunday of both MB's in the F1 cars, but the Lewis Hamilton Appreciation Society, otherwise known as the ITV-F1 production team were so far up Lewis' ass that could not find time to show the feature and have postponed it until the German GP.

What if Lewis put's it on pole again, will we have to awiat another GP?

No offence to Lewis, a bloody good driver, but come on ITV, last weekend was just taking the Piss with all the coverage of Lewis and Co. Oh I almost forgot the bit when the production team forced Martin to go and talk to some artifical girly wank fest pop group! Please, this is F1 not daytime TV

I wa sinvolved in the dvelopment of the simulator at Williams, it's a custom software, other than that I'm not saying any more, it does go a fair way to showing how hard it is to drive a modern F1 car.

He was 3 seconds off the pace, the vast majority of it lost through Stowe and exiting Chapple.

He wrote it up in The Sunday Times at the weekend.

I thought F1 cars had power steering these days.

Maybe they turned it off in the simulator to make fatty Blundell work a bit?

They do, even without PAS the steering is still amazingly heavy.
