Audi and Merc spend mega bucks, but Bmw dont play, yet tout themselves as the ultimate driving machine ?

Are they heavily involved in any form of tintop racing ?

Just my idle thoughts on the way in this morning......

Because the cost is a lot higher than WTCC - remember BMW also has to run FBMW in Britian and Germany (soon to be combined to form a Euro chmapionship supporting F1) as well as Asia and America. They also have to put money towards their F1 programme, while the Petronas and Intel sponsorship helps reduce the cost, theres still a a fair bit of investment needed.

I guess their strategy is that their production cars are so good that why race in another series with purpose-built out and out racers besides F1.

WTCC and ETCC at least 'look' like normal road cars... ish.

WTCC also allows them to emphasise their RWD drivetrain, whereas it's the norm in the DTM. But ultimately they have a lot of experience and success in 2-litre Touring Cars, a move to the DTM, as well as being more localised would also yield less in results.

Sitting at the back of my friends company's workshop is an unfinished project....

Right, these are the rules to do DTM. (I think)

i) You must have a V8 in your range.

ii) You must have RWD in your range.

So sitting there, under a dust cover, is the remains of the MG DTM car !!! hehe

I kid you not...

In theory then, the new M3 means that BMW could quite easily drop that into the series without the homologation costs? It would be a treat to see what a 'DTM' version of the M3 would sound/look/go like biggrin

Think BMW M5 series...

... paint it BMW's corporate colours (white/blue/black)...

... stick on some aero kits, ala WTCC...

voila, a DTM car! tongue out

No chance I'm afraid, although no knows what to do with it or even who it belongs to. I suspect that at some stage it will be for sale in the back of Autosport or at auction. Its only a bare tub and engine anyway, no bodywork so it wouldn't be a very interesting picture.

Slightly off topic but did anyone else ever have a good look round one of those V8 powered MG-ZTs?
Couldn't believe what was under the bonnet, talk about doing your R&D in the field. The wiring was all over the shop and the V8 still had a Mustang plaque on the air filter. They really were desperate towards the end. Mind you I understand they're quite fun to drive and must be a doodle to tune up. (if the chassis can take it.)

You need to speak to KermitPower and Mechsympathy about those - they both have them. Mechs has the supercharged version and is rather handy!

The chassis by all accounts is more than capable of handling it, and I've seen the thing through some tough corners and it handles in a way that belies its weight!

A best barge bargain if any!

If only it were that simple - if you get a chance, check out one of these cars close up - think F1 with a carbon body. But I guess you're just having a bit of fun in any case smile

DTM is being totally propped up by Mercedes nowadays, Haug desperately keeping his fingers crossed that Audi will commit to another year....

Yeah, my tongue was firmly pressed against the cheek. smile

Even the primitive Australian V8 Supercars need more work than the general process I described. And I know that the DTM series has more technology than AV8SC.

Weren't there three manufacturers in the DTM a few years ago? Merc, Audi, and Opel, I think. Why the drop in participation?

Usual story I think, not enought folding.

IIRC it was also announced that they would be withdrawring at about the same time as they were laying a fair number of workers off.

Nothing at all to do with the fact they were getting their arses handed back to them as well I'm sure biggrin

There was a couple of Opel Vectras running recently. Could have been as late as last year, if not '05. Distictly remember one of them having a big off at Hockenheim at the last round of the season - H-H Frentzen driving.

Then there was the V8 Astra Coupe and the Calibra before that. Didn't Alfa have some involvement too? Before the V8 era I think.

You're fazing the distinction between DTM and ITC.

late 80s DTM morphed into the ITC - mega-mega bucks series, Williams prepared all of the Opel Calibras for example, and the works budgets were exceeding that of the F1 teams of the Era.

ITC collapsed due to the massive costs - at it's admittedly spectacular height in 1994, Merc had the Evo II, Opel had the Calibra, Alfa had the 155 - Alfa dropped out, then Opel pulled the plug.

DTM then resurfaced with Opel, Audi and Merc.

These days it's a sillouette series - the roof line needs to be the same as the road car, but that's about it in terms of relevance to the road cars. Despite the attempt by the series directors to curb costs (each team can only have three engines for the whole season) it's still ludicrously expensive and faintly irrelevant. Still a great spectacle though.

The ?TCC series are road car based, and BMW produced a specific homologation E90 - the 320si - with the Vanos removed etc.
